6bt in a 2002 F-150, can it be done?

I have a 2002 F-150 supercrew 4x4 and the ole 5.4 is going out! i think i want to do a solid axle swap with leaf springs up front with 1 ton springs and axles. and drop a 12v cummins with a nv4500 tranny. i know that the clutch linkege would be a problem as well as just fitting the dang thing in there (cummins lol) id just like some ideas on prices and diffulculty
thanks, justin

I want to say Farm boys diesel did that irc... but id give them a call

cumminsf150 10-24-2011 04:10 PM

if you can do the axle swap, you can do the engine no problem. You shouldnt even ask, just do it, unless you just want more motivation to do it when the haters come out saying buy an f350:rocking::rocking::rocking:

BTW im running a stock 88 f150 master cylinder with a stock 91 dodge slave, works perfect.

Go for it! I cramed a '97 12v and nv4500 in a 1971chevy c20 :rocking:

JUSTIN_MOORE 10-24-2011 05:25 PM

Thanks guys! Ill do some homework and try to figure out what all i need to do. what do yall think about a 4bt. im looking for about 400- 700 hp and about 1000 torque? is that doable

Oil Field Trash 10-24-2011 05:33 PM

I have a 4bt head and block forsale

F350Fummins 10-24-2011 10:26 PM

4bt with those numbers... that will not be cheap. I would recommend a p pumper for those numbers but I'm sure you already know that. If you like doing all that work more power to ya but you can pick up cheap f250 super duties with 5.4's pretty cheap then you have a heavy duty enough truck to just drop the cummins right in, just my .02. :tu:

JUSTIN_MOORE 10-25-2011 10:36 PM

how much do you want for that 4bt oil field?

Oil Field Trash 10-26-2011 04:58 PM

idk like i said its just the bear block and head. i dont know much about it, it was given to me by a buddy who was moving and it was just laying in the barn

i think a 4bt would be cool, but since they never put them in a pickup truck, when you find one, you still wont have the parts you need. I bought a 91 dodge truck for 1900, literally had everything i needed, the only thing i bought for the swap was new dodge motor mounts, about 25 bucks. the way i see it, a 6bt ends up being cheaper.

Cool stuff

IIRC there was a fella on here who did a 4bt in his 03 f150 or one of those years right around there. and it was EXTREMELY tight from what i could tell with the pics. it could very well be doable but definitely do your research before you pull it all apart to find out it wont fit:argh:

cumminsf150 11-05-2011 09:23 AM

it can always fit, as long as you are ok with cutting/ relocating things. While we are suggesting other trucks, the older 87-96 bodystyle has tons of room in it, i also took my inner fenders out so i can work on the engine from the sides, almost like an 18 wheeler with a tilt hood.

Thats it just make it a tilt hood.:rocking:

JUSTIN_MOORE 11-08-2011 01:24 PM

these are all great ideas but i need to keep my truck i have now because i wont get anyhthing for it. the 5.4 is completley dead now!!:argh:

From what Ive heard, there are space limitations on doing a 5.9 in a 97+ versus our trucks. Anything is possible with enough time and money, I just dont want to lead him on thinking a 5.9 will slip right in his engine bay like it did in mine. But it would definately be cool :rocking:

andrewmp6 11-12-2011 07:08 AM

The engine bay is tight on them my brother has a 01 changing the coil packs on it was a pain on the passenger side.It might fit but i think some beating on the firewall would be in order to fit.

You could look for an old box truck. bread van. There are alot of those out there with 4bt diesels in them. I know a guy here local that as bought a few for his conversions. He strips them of their drive train, then cuts up the body,(usually aluminum) and the body just about pays for the purchase price of the van.( depending on what scrap is paying at the time).
Thats my .02 cents.
