Idea for new engine
 

Hello new to the site, I just have a couple of questions regarding converting my 1976 GMC sierra with a 350 in a 6bt diesel burning monster :)

1) What are the appropriate steps or little things I need to be aware of, I will be buying a donor truck but I plan to put in a matching 5 speed NV4500, it is a 2 wheel drive truck. What are some problems I might run into regarding hook up? I do currently have an automatic and I know the complications in switching to a CHEVY manual, but not a dodge.

2) I do not plan on going faster than 55mph unless I have to, max is 65 on freeways. My question is, what is the appropriate RPM for a diesel at 55mph, is 1800 too high? I have a dana 60 rear end with 4.10. Partly my reason for going NV4500, I know a diesel would not be happy with a th400 and 4.10 rear gears. I will be using 31" tires, but I will not be afraid to buy 35"tires to keep the rpm's down.

I will be towing from time to time seeing as its a truck, I would go 4bt execpt its a C2500 and a 4bt might be a little small if I decide to tow. Thanks guys! Cummins :rocking:

1) It should be the same for either a Chevy or Dodge manual. Crossmember, driveshaft, clutch master cylinder, and clutch pedal will need to be changed/installed/adapted/rigged.

2) No 1800rpm will be just fine at 55mph. With an NV4500, 31" tires, and 3.55 gears it should put you right at that, with 4.10's it will be considerably higher.

Thank you! I will probably have to put bigger tires on my rig, but no big deal, I need the lift anyway to clear the oil pan. Not to mention the gas mileage will be better either way. shooting for about 20 on the street, an improvement from 8 :P

Im about to potentially get some 3.27 gears put in (3.55 now) and hopefully hit over 30 highway :choochoo:
