i have a 1959 cummins c-180 supercharged engine with a road ranger 10 speed in a 1947 white schoolbus. i m wanting to put a automatic on it..i am having trouble trying to find a flywheel and maybe a bellhousing to do this swap..has anyone here ever made this swap..or know if it is even possible and where i can locate parts:argh:..thanks..R.C.

most people on thkis site only deal with the smaller diesels in the ford/chevy/dodges.

im guessing your wanting to put somethin biger like an eaton auto shift trans which is a semi auto? or are u wanting to go full auto?

opps, guess i didnt read the titke closely.

ive never messed with a c180 so not sure how the bel housing is set up. if its the same whole pattern as the b series cummins, then detroked should have all u need

hi thanks for the reply..yes a c180 supercharged cummins is a older engine (but so am i)..it is only 464 cu.in.. there was a time i could remember what bell housing it has, if memory serve's right i would say a #1.. a bit smaller than used on the 855 cummins llike in my other truck..i have never messed with anything as far as trans go except the standards.. my old legs are getting so bad its hard for me to use a clutch thats why i am wanting to change it over to a automatic.. i was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a flywheel made for this set-up or im i looking at getting something made up at more cost than i can afford right now..i know where i can get a trans from a dt466 that i am thinking of using. i need to go check but i think it uses the #1 bellhousing too

the SAE issued the ratings for engine and transmission bellings to standardise the industrial engine market,to this end i made up a cardboard template of a SAE #3 bell [ to match my 6bta ] and went around the breakers yards-i found nothing suitable, hopefully you will fare better-lovely looking old bus.

the dimentions of the various SAE bell housings are up on the web.gluck.

thanks for the help...i my be thinking backwards and a #1 is the large and the #3 is the smaller bellhousing..been away from the diesel shop to long i guess..i need to make a few measurements and do some looking..right now i am very busy just repairing damage from letting my bus set for 16 years..hope to have it repaired and repainted in a few weeks...here is where i am now

still no automatic

well its been a few months since i posted..i got the bus back up and running.. i have stopped by a few shops and asked questions.... but still have not found any parts or a answer to if there are such parts.. i guess i dont really need to change transmissions i extended the clutch brackets and arm to where it is somewhat easier to hold down at red lights... now what i really need to do is get some power steering on it..:(.. i took it for a test drive down old rt. 66 from chicago to california and back then over to tennessee 7,000 miles total with no major breakdowns..:jump: just a small fuel line problem...will keep ya'll posted on the progress if i do happen find any parts to get a automatic in it... i'll post a link to the progress on the bus up till now...

I love the 180 Cummins. Very cool engine for a project

whisky runner 09-06-2011 08:55 PM

yea it is a great 24valve cummins..:tu:not the biggest powerhouse for sure....it does pull this 9ton bus around good...for a engine built in 1959 it does it's job:jump:if i could just get power steering :dang:now i would be a happy man
