Diesel Swap ????

First off Hello to everybody . I've been lurking around 4bt swap and diesel bomber site trying to gain some incite about diesel conversion for a 74 Bronco ,

I was thinking about throwing a 4bt in the truck but everybody that has one forsale , they think they have a gold mine . So started looking at Mercedes 5 cylinder turbo diesel and put it up against a ZF 5 speed , But really havn't alot of information good or bad about a Mercedes engines . Can anybody pass on there knowledge ? Thanks JT :tu:

I dnt either... But you dnt have any large bakary/chip/parcel delivery wharehouses in the area? Thats your best bet for a cheap 4bt.

Well believe it or not I have been on Dove bid trying to put my hands on a chip truck . I just think that they try and drive the price as high as possible , I have seen the same truck go up for auction more times then I possible would like to mention . I maybe a little bit of a tight ass but I don't like to give money away . As far as anything local I havn't found anything . That's why I started looking at a Mercedes conversion . Do you happen to know where there a 4bt setting for a good price ?

Does it have to run? My bud has one that needs a slight rebuild but comes with all the stuff. He thought about selling it but he wasnt sure.

Red_Rattler 01-10-2011 01:10 AM

That I do not know but I can ask him and see what he says

There are other large 4cyl diesels used in the smaller cabovers.... Hino, Isuzu/GMC, etc. Might be worth a look.

The 4BT prices are up because it has such a following now for conversions. So much is the case you can get a 2wd Dodge with a 6BT for less in most cases.

JohnT 01-10-2011 08:59 AM

Yea but I still don't think they worth what a lot poeple are asking . I really do understand but it just a diesel engine in a bad economy . I know I just try to do deal with a guy on 4bt swap and he would come down on the price then raise the price on the adapter . Yea one these days I find a fair deal .

u2slow 01-10-2011 09:08 AM

Which adapter?

IMO, its best to go the Dodge adapter route anyway... fits the largest clutch, and a Getrag should be plenty stout behind the 4BT.

I was looking for a ford adapter because I have a zf 5speed to put behind it. Why do you happen too have one? :yeah:

Red_Rattler 01-10-2011 03:16 PM

Its a VE 4bt non turbo that needs a rebuild. A new rebuild kit would come along with the motor. It was bought from military surplus and was more then likely out of a generator. Unknown hours? Head was just redone. Is all he told me, have yet to talk to him on a price or if he still is thinking abt selling it. I'll bug him bout it if anyones interested.

JohnT 01-10-2011 03:22 PM

I thought that you couldn't use a generator motor ? Or just because it don't have a turbo on it ?

pump on a genset engine is diffrent. Buy a 4bt with a ford adapter and drop it in the bronco with a t19. The zf is a great trans but you need to make sure you have enough wheelbase for it. I used a mercedes in a jeep and the 4bt has twice the power and is much better on fuel. I would use the highest ring and pinion i could get and stay away from over drive trannys unless the zf will fit. With the mercedes you wont need overdrive unless you run 4.56 gears they are meant to turn way higher than most diesels thats why they like fuel so much.
