Yup, its another '47 Ford but unlike this '47, mine will be a little less impressive. But back on topic:

Its a stock '47 Ford one ton truck, came with a flathead 6, four speed, and a full floating rear axle. My plans for it are very open to change but here's the plans for now: 4bt cummins or 3-53 detroit mated to a 5 speed manual, out back there's going to be a dually axle (dana 80 or similar), flatbed with a dark stain on hardwood, and of course the whole thing will be lowered a couple of inches.

-to find a truck like that is your destiny, and as much as i love cummins-give it detroit!!!-they piss oil, they suck derv, but they never stop and they haul the coal-

all aside-beautiful truck-what a find-PLEASE DONT=turn it into a shiney pony clone-these old trucks survived because they were born tough, look tough=are tough.looks so fine right now.

I have full confidence in my skills as a mechanic, however this is my first diesel project so i'm a bit nervous. Only a little though. And i'm on a very tight budget. Stupid college bills. :argh:

I would love to have a Detroit, but it will simply come down to what i can find at the right price. At the moment i have a lead on a cheap 6bt, but if that falls through then who knows what will end up in it. Ultimate goal is a truck that is consistently a good runner and driver.

And just out of curiosity: What is a 6bta? Hows it differ from a 6bt?

6BT is a 6 cylinder B series motor with a turbo....

6BTA is a 6 cylinder B series motor with a turbo and 'aftercooling'
(Think of it as a liquid cooled intake to lower the compressed air intake temperatures vs. a front mounted intercooler... orl like the 1989-1990 dodges.... no intercooling or aftercooling period....)

PS: The cummins is easy to work on.. just do your homework before taking ANYTHING apart...... but to be honest... their pretty simple motors....

snowman88 01-09-2011 09:50 PM

Ok, i am familiar with aftercoolers and intercoolers. I just didn't put 2 and 2 together. Thanks.

Nice find snowman88, Why are you putting a flatbed on it? The bed looks like it's in pretty good shape in the first couple of pictures. :pca1:

snowman88 01-10-2011 09:12 AM

Well the bed is in ok shape, lots of dents and some rust, it is the part of the truck with the most damage. The biggest problem would be the fenders. From Ford they didn't come with enough support and they flexed alot which created cracks in them. If i could find a good set of fenders, they probably wouldn't be cheap, but i might still do the original bed. Plus, done right, a flatbed looks bitchin'.

LOVE the sound of 2 stroke detroits. A Cummins would be cool, but a 3-53 or 4-53 Detroit would be even cooler :tu:

So no real updates yet due to the cold weather and lack of funds. I did find a 6bt that i was going to pick up for cheap ($750 but didn't run) however that deal fell through for an unknown reason. I did however finally find the serial number that is stamped into the frame and got a bill of sale for the truck.

Minor update: Found a donor chassis for the '47 cab, got a '90 F450 Superduty as a rolling chassis with cab and front clip. Going to start pulling it apart so that i can sell off the extra parts so that i can mock up the '47 cab onto it. Here's a few pics, and if you want any parts off it just ask, selling stuff for dirt cheep:

EasternAggie 03-16-2011 11:22 AM

Good luck dude! Post pics when you can! :tu:

snowman88 03-16-2011 12:26 PM

Yup, that's a 68. It belongs to my brother. He's also had a 69 Mustang and i have a 78 Honda CB550 motorcycle that i built.

So i finally got some work done on the truck, got both cabs removed and the '47 cab got fitted onto newer frame. Had to do some cutting on the front clip to get it close, but it still needs a little more work to get everything to match. Here's some pictures of the progress:

good stance-same make chassis n tin,all good.always nice to have plenty of room to mount the engine and drive train.start from the radiator or intercooler and measure back from there.taking the viscous coupling fan drive assembly off the 6bta and going with electric fan[s] saves a lot of room.

snowman88 06-09-2011 07:41 PM

Ya, there's plenty of room top to bottom, and i'm hoping there's enough room front to back without having to modify the firewall but i will if i have to.

Mounting a hydraulic dump flatbed off of an early ford truck tonight, got lucky with it and the frame rails are both the same width. Pictures to come.

Alright, got some more done since yesterday. Using an engine hoist and a motorcycle jack i managed to get the flatbed into the air far enough to roll the truck underneath it.

Nice progress :tu:

beerbellykelly 06-13-2011 03:33 PM

enjoyed the pictures of the body lift-reminds me of using all the motorcycle stuff and all the trolleys jacks i had to get stuff lifted-i looked for ages for cheap axle stands that would take5-10 tons-gave up and made some-way cheaper.
will you keep that body as is /really suits the cab.

DieselS10 06-13-2011 09:34 PM

Subscribes!

I've got to see this one come together. :tu:

snowman88 06-15-2011 01:14 PM

Thanks guys! Everything body wise is going to remain the same except I might extend the bed another foot or so.

You know I'm watching this one closely.............:choochoo:

d4klutz 05-01-2012 03:21 PM

Any updates? Im really liking what you are doing here.:pca1:

snowman88 05-01-2012 03:31 PM

Sadly, no progress has been made. The project has been placed on the back burner for a while due to having to move, not sure when i'll be able to get started on it again but hopefully in the next year.
