1984 Ford Ranger 2.2L Perkins
as my sig says i have a 1984 ford ranger with a 2.2L perkins non-turbo. this was my high school truck and my first rig. the fuel pump went out on it so i bought my PSD and had to park it. it has sintimental meaning to me so i dont want it to sit and rot away. does anyone know anything about these trucks or where i can find parts for them????
|
I have a 84 XLT
|
is it a Diesel?
|
Diesel "Yes"
2.2 Mazda built motor. Mazda first used them in the B2200 in 82 to, I believe in 84.
|
ive only seen 2 in person and one on craigslist other then mine. all four that ive seen have been regular cab long box, 2WD and manual tranny, is yours like this?
|
i'm sure there has to be parts for them somewhere, or at least someone that could rebuild them
|
Well Caterpillar owns Perkins Diesel . . .
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- I'm not sure what kinda fuel pump is on there but any other engine parts you should be able to get at a Cat Dealership |
Yes it is. I don't think that a 4x4 was offered till 85 when they went to the Mitisubushi turbo model. My neighbor bought one new in 83 and still drives it. It is terribly rusty and I kid him that I sneak down there at night and pour salt water on it. Mine has very little rust on it, the worst is around the bed wheel wells, which I have patch panels for.
|
I have a perkins in my JCB and you can buy parts for the engine there but you will pay a lot for them. Take the fuel pump to diesel pump repair place (shop around first) AND HAVE IT SERVICED. i LET A case fUEL PUMP GET FULL OF WATER :scare2: AND IT COST ME $600.00 TO BE REBUILT.:humm:
|
thanks a lot guys, i had no idea who owned Perkins. i have a Cat dealer about 20 minutes from my house ill swing in there. Doda, i had a diesel mechanic get a quote for me to rebuild the fuel pump, it was $550-600 to rebuild the shaft that is cracked, or $900-1000 to rebuild they entire pump! lvista, is your cab an extended or just a custom?
|
I would say the most common problem is a clogged fuel filter. This information should be in your owners manual.
|
My dads buddy bought an 84 (maybe early 85) xlt 4x4 shortbed reg cab with the turbo diesel brand new. I drove it a few times and had plenty of power. I think the same engine was used in the Tempo and Escort. I thought it would be cool to find one and swap it into a newer body style Ranger like maybe a 2000.

Little update guys. I had some finacial issues and ended up selling the truck to a good friend of mine under the circumstances that when he decided to sell it, it goes back to me. He got the truck into his shop and started tear down on the engine and took parts to a local diesel shop and had the injection pump rebuilt 15% over as well as the injectors rebuilt. He then pulled a manifold off a car he had in high school, I believe it was 2.3L or similar, but it matched right up, he modified it and added a 48mm turbo, built his own downpipe and straight piped the truck to a 4" single stack. The radiator had a crack in it and he sodered the hole. Put new batteries in and replaced all the hoses and most electrial lines underneath the hood. Used some old Glowshift gauges he had from his superduty and mounted them in the cap for monitoring. Issues he discovered why it wouldnt run was bad batteries, old battery cables and the injection pump had blown gaskets (I already new this but didnt have the knowledge nor the finances to have rebuilt) and the injectors were gummed up. Future plans he has for the truck are electric fuel pump conversion, 18" mustang wheels, 5 speed trans swap and 4WD conversion from a 85 2.3l gas ranger his uncle said he could have, paint it white with a black 2 tone herculiner to match his superuty and a flat bed along with swapping the porno red interior out and changing it to grey and black. His project plan for it are 150HP and 35+ MPG. Thank you guys for the input and the help, just wanted to catch everyone up to speed since I dont get on here very often.

2.2L Perkins

I called the local Ford dealership in Vancouver,Wa to ask about what parts are available for my 1984 Ranger Diesel and the service manager laughed and said he has only seen two in his 28+ years of working there. Just how rare are these trucks?
|
They aren't unheard of, but from why I've seen they're pretty rare to come by. Either people ask a fortune when selling them or they're beat the hell and not worth the time and money. The 2.2l Perkins was used in 83 and 84 then ford switched to a 2.3l turbo Mitsubishi engine with a 5 speed and 4wd. Most of what you do to it you'll have to build yourself or take parts designed for ricers and modify them.
Sent from my Powerstroke |
How much do you usually see them go for because I don't see any for sale
|
Mine was an acception to this, but Ive seen them go for 1500-2700. I've only seen abour 4-5 of them for sale but thats what they go for.
|
Love those ranger diesels. I have an 87 with the 2.3 Mitsu. And a 84 mighty max witht he same engine. about 30 mpg on the 4x4 ranger and 40 mpg on the mighty max

My brother got a '83 about 10 months ago. Ill post some pics if I get a chance tonight to show what the previous owner did for a turbo manifold and what my brother fab'd up to replace it. it blows a lot of oil and really could use a rebuild but like everyone else he is having a ton of trouble finding any parts for it.

Few days late... but here's a few pics of my bother's 83... I think he said the turbo is off a Subaru but not sure what size it it. It doesn't do a whole lot tho because it is waste gated at 5psi.

Yeah he built the manifold. He thinks the turbo is a VF-11

Did he build that exhaust manifold? Also do you know what turbo he's running and what boost it puts out?

I've got a 82 Mazda B2200 with a 2.2, the previous owner put a ford 2.3 SOHC turbo on (which I had to rebuild because it was consuming oil like a no other), then 3 inch straight pipe to the stack, with a 5 speed. I'll post some pictures tomorrow. Just out of curiosity flyinmonkeys32, do you know what kind of boost hes running on?
|
sorry for the delay. He is running the factory settings on the wastegate. i think it tops out at about 5psi

Hope someone is still around
I used to have the 87 2.3 turbo diesel 4x4. Put a 8” lift for an explorer in it. The turbo packed it in when my buddy had it. He was a mechanic. So he had the guys at the scrap yard sending him ec
very possible turbo they could. After about a week. He had a match. A 6” Chrysler turbo matched it perfectly. An upgrade from the 4”. I just happen to come across a 84 with the 2.2. Got excited because i can hopefully snag a 94 ranger with the 4.0 automatic. Yep transmission is done. Goid i like standards better. My thoughts were. Rebuild the 2.2. But anyone know what head fits this motor? I’m hoping that the mitsubishi exhaust manifold that i have will match with the head. So i can get my turbo diesel 4x4 again. No computer to run the diesel. So i can put a standard in. Get rid of that automatic forever. I’m actually selling my Jetta tdi to do this. The guy with the 84 ranger. Has a gasket kit for it already. I’ve worked on vehicles 40 years now. Done the automatic to standard swaps. Rebuilt engines and doing modifications to suit my likes. Next up is the 2013 s4 bumper cover. Onto my 07 A4. Fender and cover modifications. So any help with the heads info and possibly a turbo manifold that will match will be greatly appreciated. |
I’d love one
