F150 Diesel ?

Anyone did it ? my 2000 is getting tired thinking about any comments http://i56.tinypic.com/nmknix.jpg

94cummins diesel 11-24-2010 09:58 PM

looks great man looks like you need a cummins in it do it up anyone else add to this

chromehound 11-24-2010 11:03 PM

I can't give you much for detail but a guy in my area has a 4BT Cummins in a early-mid 90's (?) F150...only seen pics and a dyno vid a buddy shot. There are more vids on youtube of diesel half tons and smaller ranger/dakota size trucks.

crzycummins 11-24-2010 11:20 PM

6bt that mofo

chromehound 11-25-2010 11:03 AM

I think the 6BT would be way to heavy for the 1/2 tone front end and all the extra work to get it to work would be a pain. It would be cool though but way to much work. My .02

well thats what thinkin will get ya lol

but just kidding dude :tu:

back to the subject.... the 5.9 is a very possible swap for pre-97 F150s. but as far as I know, there are some pretty big space issues for 97 and ups. FordCummins doesnt even sell a conversion kit for 97 and up F150 for the 6BT 5.9 Cummins

It is possible to put a 5.9 Cummins in your 2000, but I think the 3.9 4BT would be an easier swap. Any other questions just holler.

450Jimmy 11-26-2010 07:50 AM

I figured the swap wud have the truck laid up for a while. I am just trying to figure out how much budwiser it would cost me to keep my buddy interested in helping me do this. I wud like to have the 5.9 plus my old man has one. in the junk yard I just really was thinkin about coolant issues with rads and that type of stuff being a major issue

My project is probably a completely different animal than yours.... but here it is.

Workin on my mine over summer break, bout 3 or 4 hours a day, it took somewhere between 3 weeks to a month, with lots of part hunting all throughout there. And I switched my radiator out for one from a 96 Powerstroke, but I had to change the radiator support too. Mine was a relatively smooth swap, but Im thinkin theres gonna be a lot more issues with yours if you choose a 5.9. Anything is possible, but it just depends if you want to take the time and do the work (and spend the $$$) to do it.

Take my advice, and give FordCummins a call, theyll probably give you the best advice you can get. Their number is on their website at FordCummins.com :tu:

450Jimmy 11-26-2010 03:28 PM

yea I will take your advice and look in to ford cummins I dont really wanna spend to much cash I would like to use most parts i cud get my hands on like I said my old man got one in the yard but im not looking to do a swap that becomes a money pit and aggravation

EasternAggie 11-26-2010 04:45 PM

What are you planning on using for a tranny? Does the 5.9 that you have already have a transmission with it too?

Mdub707 12-03-2010 10:31 AM

Fordcummins has some horror stories across the net. Most of the conversion "gurus" will tell you to call destroked up. You can call and talk to Ryan Bean from Beans diesel too, since they do a lot of repowering trucks.

You can also research here: www.4btswaps.com

What kind of horror stories? I'm just curious. All I can say about my experiences with them and their products is :tu: :tu: :tu:

I'm by no means a "guru", but heck its my testimonial. I had never even heard of destroked when I did my swap, everyone I talked to pushed for FordCummins. I even called them several times during the swap, and they were glad to give me help when I needed it. I'm not saying don't go destroked, I'm just stating my experiences with FC.

I give fordcummins an A+ too. They were very friendly and informative. I only used there instruction manuals, not the adapter though, maybe those aren't the best

True I didn't use an adapter plate. But the motor mounts and all the other parts (basically the adapters for the gauges) in the kit worked perfectly.

question for 450 jimmy - did you have an IQ 600 and sell it to a guy in Iowa?

DangerMan 12-13-2010 01:24 PM

Been There, Done That

Ive Gota 250 that I 6BT Swapped this year, And I wont Lie....
Its not easy. BUT>>> with Time and enough money:lol88: Anything is possible.
That being said, if theres one peice of advice I could Give, havin done a Fummins now, Its: Take peices of advice from everybody, but not ALL from one person. Opinions differ. Make your own,

I would go with a Full 94-98.5 drivetrain. Easiest swap, for sure.
Ive done a 1st Gen with the Ford Tranny,, can you say $$$$$$$
My 95 2500 was $3100 for the Whole TRUCK!! Runs Awesome.
Find one thats been maintained but Wrecked. Straight swap that B!#$!!!

Good Luck....Im here if ya need me.:tu:

It looks like they may be selling F150's with a Ford built diesel soon....Ford 4.4 Turbo Diesel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Or anyone of these Ford built diesels would be a good swap into an older F150....Ford AJD-V6/PSA DT17 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Right on Dangerman. I read forums for over a year before I tried to tackle mine. Lot's of research makes life a lot easier, and cheaper!

Guess I just got REALLY lucky with mine :humm:

This was a slightly spur of the moment thing for me, from the time I first got the idea til it was finished was 3 months, actual swap only took about 3 weeks, workin on and off a few hours a day. Budget stayed well under control also. Not to say there were scratchin head times :argh: there were lots of them, but it wasnt too bad.

And I've NEVER done anything like this before this swap. Most I had ever done mechanically was change an alternator or starter. So I'm glad I didn't get burned my first time :c:

Now to tackle something a little more challenging...... 6-71 detroit in a 49 Powerwagon here I come!! :choochoo:

It was probably easier for you Because you went to an A&M University ?, TX or FL ?

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

I have noticed a pattern on allot of the diesel forums, and Mags here in the US, Overkill.
I have a 2002 VW TDI because of the MPG's. And I am really into diesels because of the Torque and efficiency. But I think putting a 6 BT into a F150 is crazy, and spending tons of money to get 800 HP,and 1200 Ft,lbs of torque from a Pick up is crazy too, Unless you coul;d get extra MPG,s. I think the Cummins engines are great engines, even peter then power strokes. So a 4bt might be a good choice for a F150. But it still weighs Almost 800 Lbs. Thats why Cummins engines last so long, they just make everything beefier. With that being said I believe the European made Ford diesel are great choices and can be gotten here.

I have seen allot of Mercedes swaps on this site, and I think the OM 606, or OM648 would be a good swap into a F150, or OM 642,and OM 647, found in Sprinter Vans.
My last vehicle was a 97 F250 Powerstroke

How would what college I go to affect the ease of my swap? And BTW, I didnt go to either one, the last two years I was at a small junior college, I was simply an agricultural major. Eastern Oklahoma State College. Hence EasternAggie :tu:

How do you why I'm into diesels? You say you like them because of torque and efficiency, and thats the main two reasons I love diesels also. Before the swap, my straight six gas was getting 16mpg ALL the time, now I'm getting 24-25 average, and got 29 highway my last trip home. Thats a 60%-nearly 100% increase. With higher gears and advanced timing, I plan on hitting upper 30's. Yes it will get some performance work done to it, and be fast, but mileage will still be reasonable. And the 6bt weight 1025lbs dry BTW.

Don't insult my swap dude. Why do all you Mercedes guys have to be *butts*? :td:

I'll touch on one more topic. So you say you dont see the point in high hp diesel trucks? What would you rather have, a 8-10mpg performance street gas truck, or a 16-24mpg performance street diesel truck?

seaglf 12-17-2010 11:05 AM

Sorry.. My god father went to TX A&M and became the presedent of research for Frito Lay, and had an IQ of 180, so I am a fan of Aggie Colages, I was giving you a complament assuming you went to A&M you would be able to do Mechanical projects more easily.

These are the weights of the Fords V8's, Engine Weights and Dimensions

Engine
Weight
4.6L SOHC 500 lbs.
5.4L SOHC 525 lbs
4.6L DOHC Aluminum Block 425 lbs
5.4L DOHC 540 lbs
6.8L SOHC V-10 640 lbs.
assuming that the heaviest 5.4 was the engine in the Donor truck, a 6Bt would be insanely heavy and would require a major frame and suspension mod. It would be cool though I just don't see it as a Practical truck. A Cummins/Allison/ F450,or 550 would though.
I actually thought about swapping the V10 into a F150 when they first came out with them, that would be cool.
A 4bt would be a little more practical at 745-782, even though it would still involve some suspension mods, and you can find lots of them on Ebay with allison transmissions. Someone on this site has don that swap already.
A good example of engine weight problems in a truck not designed to handle it. was My 97 Ford F250 4/4 with the Powerstroke. I ran through a trench on the beach around Freeport Texas, and bottomed out on the Bumpstops, bending the driver side I beam. I only had a few hundred miles on it. That was the last year of that design, and it was basically a F150 With a thousand pound engine that they didn't redesign the front end for.

I wish some of the High performance Aluminim Block companies, like world products, would make blocks for the Powerstrokes, cummins and duromax. I'm sure the could add Chromoly engine girdles, and make them beefy enough, but take allot of weight of the engine.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Oh and I'm not a Mercedes dude, I am not loyal to any manufacturer, they are just machines.
And I admire that you have done that swap, I haven't done any yet, I am just doing research.
And as for Hot rods..I want a 69 Convertible Camaro,or a late model Vette

Oh ok dude. Believe me I'm sure an good 'ol Oklahoma country boy would be better at a swap than some Texan :tttt: And that cool about your dad :tu: The college I was at when it started out was Eastern Oklahoma A&M, but now EOSC, and OSU where I'm at now used to be Oklahoma A&M, so really I am lol.

Those are all modular V8's which were not offered in my truck. They did not get those until 97. The options in my truck were 4.9 straight six (what mine had), 5.0 V8, and 5.8 V8. My old straight six weighed about 400 lbs.

For the suspension I'm still using the factory Twin I-beam, but I added F250 diesel coil springs and gas charged shocks, all in all, costing me about $150. Ride height is a little big higher than stock, even with all the weight, and it handles very well, there's not a lot of body roll, no more than it had stock. Really, it handles like it did before. I see no issue with practicality there :hellox:

I think it is a very good swap. With EVERYTHING I used for the swap, I spend $3200. After selling back my old engine and tranny, and the donor truck rear axle, net I spent a little over $2k. So for $2000, I got a TON more power and mileage, a suspension that holds it, and a pretty sweet truck. I'm not saying a 4bt isn't a good swap, I just wanted a 5.9, and its working out pretty well, so I don't see an issue with it.

get the exhausts re done to be loud as anything and put black number plates on it, tint the windows and put a dvd/sat nav screen in it… now that would be something else

seaglf 12-18-2010 01:06 PM

Cool... I will need another truck in the near future, so i may consider doing that swap myself. according to these specs... 7.3L Power Stroke Specs ,http://www.cumminsdieselspecs.com/12v.html the 7.3 powerstroke was about the same as the Cummins anyway. And from what I have always heard, especially from diesel engineers,( I am a captain and work with diesels on our vessels, and have engineers) the cummins is a much better engine. I know from some of the Automotive books I have the straight six Configuration is the most internally balanced, as well as Boxer engines.

If I did a swap I think i would like to use a later model F450,since they have dana 80's and higher GVWR, to really put the Cummins to good use. Or I could just buy a F650 that comes stock with the Cummins Allison combo..

Specking of Boxer engines I found this on wiki, and have searched to find one but can't, I think it would be a really cool engine to mess with its a flat 12. File:Diesel Engine Type DS140 2C Hino.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and this is another cool F150 swap option, although it is underpowered and for maximum MPG's Shade Tree Conversions-Downloads-Truck Plans Book

Yeah I've heard of shade tree before, I've visited his website several times. Its a pretty neat swap, but not much more than a straight mileage vehicle. Id like to take one of those perkins and put it in a reg cab ranger and see what kind of mpgs it could get :humm:

But with advanced timing after I get head studs, and a higher rear end ratio (either 3.31 or 3.08) I should be able to hit high 30's, and possibly low 40's if I can get my timing high enough. There's a guy by the name of Jeff Garmon that has an 07 dodge 1500 reg cab sb, with a twin turbo, 700hp 5.9 12v Cummins. He's running 32 Degrees of timing and 3.21 gears, that put him at about 1300rpm @60mph. He can easily achieve 35-40mpg in mixed driving, and has achieved 55mpg on two different highway driving. occasions.

Its hard for me to say that the Cummins is a better motor than the 7.3, I think they're both good enough engines you can't go wrong with either one :tu:

Roger that dude....The Ranger is a good idea, and they actually have a 2.8 powerstroke made by international in Brazil I think, that they put in the Rangers. I would like to know more info on the legality of doing all these swaps. I know that you can Import anything over 25 years, and I have seen allot of later model vehicles swapped, and have also seen plenty later model diesel swapped vehicles for sell on ebay. I haven't really researched the laws that much and the little that I have seen looked confusing.

I didn't know you could get that much improvement just from advancing timing.

And in Brazil they put a commonrail 3.9 Cummins in F250's :yeah:

Legality? Hah nice thing about living in Oklahoma is they really don't give a crap. We don't have emissions, heck we don't even have inspection anymore. They got rid of vehicle inspection about 7 or 8 years ago I think.

With the right setup advanced timing can help alot. But higher timing hurts cold weather starting, especially when you're running enough fuel, and increases cylinder pressure, so you've got to upgrade head studs to hold it. Stock studs don't like anything over 16* I believe.

seaglf 12-21-2010 12:09 PM

Cool I didn't know about the cummins F250 in brazil, and I found out that Indy heads makes custom aluminium heads for the 6bt, so I emailed them and asked them to make the first aluminium block for a diesel, and to do the 4bt to, lets hope that they get enough demands for that.
