looking to relocate om617 oil-filter housing...
2 Attachment(s)
Currently In the middle of installing this motor into my fj40 (early toyota landcruiser).
would love to replace the housing completely...with a modern spin-on filter solution. found a examples online, please see attached. any other options? thanks, manny |
Check superturbodiesel.com - tuning performance turbo diesel mercedes, W123, W116 and up. OM617, OM60X and the Mercedes section of www.4btswaps.com Most people fab their own and use AN fittings, braided SS hose, and a regular remote filter adapter.

It is not a good idea to replace the factory oil filter with a "modern spin-on". The benz unit is not only a main and bypass filter but thermostatically controlls the flow through the cooler. This is way better than a single spin-on, if you need to move for clearance then just remote mount the facory unit. What trans are you planning on using in the FJ?

External oil cooler thermostats are available for around $50.
A cooler must be installed though and it needs a thermostat set for over 212*f. |

sounds like the best option if to make an adapter that allows me to relocate the stock housing...
found the following example: Attachment 44457 FTE, tranny is a sm465: Attachment 44458 made possible w/Luke's kit (4x4labs.com): Attachment 44459 thanks for the replies, manny |
Hey looks great! I see you also have the motor with the cali emissions although yours has already been deleted. I kind of like the turbo mounted up high, and the intake looks like it flows better. I like your FJ! Keep us posted.

With the help from a few friends, I know have an adapter made from 5/8" aluminum...really happy with how it turned out
Used a gasket, as a template: Attachment 43865 Attachment 43866 will be using 1/2NPT to AN8 fittings Attachment 43867 Attachment 43868 final trimming: Attachment 43869 test fit: Attachment 43870 the biggest reason for my oil-housing relocation was due to a parking brake cable interference...no longer an issue :) Attachment 43871 |
Great job on whittling that piece out.Give me a few days and I'll have one filed out of aluminum. :lol88:

found a guy that is making these oil-filter relocation adapter plates @$25:
FS: Custom Billet oil filter relocation plates. no affiliation, manny |
got this on the road yet?
I'm looking to do this swap if a trade deal goes through. I want to know how the om617 likes the hwy without any OD. |

lol...35" tires would be nice but i want the ability to park in the garage. Once i get the top off i'll be too lazy to put it back on until winter sets in in late nov/early dec.
As of now i've got the 3 speed shift on the column. I was looking at a 700r4 but will have a hard time keeping my pto if i swap over to any automatic. Now i'm thinking swap in an early h42 from an fj40 and match her up to the MB om617 using a home made adapter plate. Then comes the issue of how to to make the starter work. I'm thinking maybe modify the flywheel of a non turbo MB diesel to fit the turbo version. Still in the planning stage. I put the isuzu 4bd1t in my fj60 and those engines really don't like to rev. I used a ranger overdrive to allow me 70-75mph cruising. This time around i'm building my own engine adapter kit. |
