looking to put a 12v or a 4bt in 90's ram van

my buddy wants me to put a cummins in his 90's 1 ton van, im up for it just dont know about the electrical that goes with it, i know a 12v is mech. driven but does it still need a pcm for it to run, any help for this would be great, or if anyone has seen this or has done this some pointers would be great too, thanks..

Early Dodge 12V(6BT) doesn't need any electrics except to the starter, shut down solenoid, alternator, and gauges. No pcm.The 12V may not clear the engine cover inside. If it won't,consider a 4BT.More detailed info can be found here. Cummins 4BT & Diesel Conversions Forums

Is the guy deaf....yet? As lovable as those engines are, I'm not real sure I'd want to sit right next to one for any extended periods of time.:s:

Those vans are fairly quite,IF the heat shield mat hasn't been removed from inside the engine cover. They're really quite with the thick rubber mats on the engine cover and rubber floor cover..I'm not talking luxury car quite, but more than you'd expect from a work van.A conversation can be had without yelling.

Not with a 12valve sitting there !

angelic0 worded it right.

We used to have a '92 (or was it a '93? been a while) B-250 w/the 318 (5.9Magnum). Was decently quiet that way, but, I bet there'll be a LOT of motormusic coming thru the sheetmetal, damping-materials or not.

But, it'll run forever. Use the 4BT just to avoid overcrowding.

I have been looking into it some and 1 thing I DO know is that the engine will NOT clear the firewall in front of the dash, so lowering it is likely the other option to hacking the firewall.

Front length is dicey, at best, but some set-back may cure that issue, as well as deleting the stock fan.

ALSO, turbo clearance to the doghouse will be at a Premium, this means enhanced chances of insufferable heat, to go along with the aforementioned noise.

:tttt: on getting an Intercooler to work, in fact, I have doubts that a stock non-intercooled '89-'91 crossover would even clear.

In short, it MIGHT "fit" in there, but that would be about it.

6 or 4bt ?

6, but even the 4bt has the same height constraints.
