allison 545 swap ?

I have a 98 freightliner L-10 cummins with an allison 545 In my 93 chevy c3500 2wd that just went out with no warning. My questions is What transmission options due I have Without buying an adaptor? I want to upgrade to something stronger But keep the mechanical aspect of the 545.:argh:

I would say that's the whole problem, it's a 545 mated to an L10. That's way past the 545's torque rating. For that matter, I didnt think the 545 could be mated to anything bigger than a 6CT. Further confusion is how P-pump parts are on an L10. Besides an L10 being a few inches taller than an 8.3, I'm baffled it even fits.:humm:

i need to see pics. im moving the bearings in my water pump back, and machining new pulleys to get my dt466 to fit with an electric fan in my 96 gmc 3500hd. if it is an L10 it would have to have an Ht750 or 740 unless you made your own bellhousing.

I haven't seen a L-10 in anything newer than a 1996 Freightliner myself, but who knows!!
Weren't they replaced by the ISL ?
Anyway the 545 allison is Way under rated for the torque that L10 puts out!

I would like to see some pics as well of this dream truck!!

Just curious!:pca1::pca1::pca1::pca1::pca1::pca1::pca1:

i dont want to tick anyone off, but it is most likely a 5.9 or 8.3, although all of the 8.3's with autos ive seen are mt650 series or md3060. The 6bt and 6ct with the p pump was available in the Fl 50 60 70 for the 6bt and Fl70 for the 6ct through 1998. The 545 was available with the 5.9, possibly with the 3126 cat, but i dont think so. As far as an L10 with a Bosch P pump.... no way, they utilize a PT pump like the older big cam 855, m11, and KTA19. there is no way of swapping it on there with out some EXTREME machining to the head, valve cover, timing gear housing, custom cut gears etc.

Eastern aggie the dt466 swap is sweet.... but that motor and 10 speed are HUGE, and HEAVY(like 3000lbs), and it is getting to be a royal pain to get everthing to fit, a little more bodylift and cutting every time i work on it. Hopefully it will be done before first snow fall as my Freighliner is hard to keep greasy side down on the ice, and in the snow.

Yeah dude its like a 7.6L straight six. But if it wasnt alot of work then you wouldnt have as much to be proud about when you get it finished :tu:

Gives me hope though.... if someone can fit a DT466 or 3126 CAT into a pickup, then surely I can squeeze a 6-71 Detroit into something :humm:

Want me a screamin jimmy!! :yeah:
