12 valve to 05 F250

A friend of mine is gathering parts to swap a 12 valve into his '05 F250 4x4. It currently has the 5.4 and auto, with 4.88 gears, and 37" tires. He isn't sure what to do about the tranny. If he could make the auto hold up, he would like to keep it. I know he has found an adapter and a stand alone control module for the auto, and will need a different torque converter. What else does he need or what are the alternatives? His goal is to be pushing 500hp, basically a tow / play rig. Might occasionally do a truck pull. He doesn't want to dump a load into the auto if it is just going to crap out on him.

You could either swap in a 6-speed ZF6, or have the 5R100 built up. You might also consider going with a built 48RE too

tell your friend to check out forcummins.com. They sell an installation manual for this application. I recently did this same conversion and they also sell any parts you will need. The stock converter in the 5r110 was used in my conversion along with a custom flywheel they sell. He will need to buy new frame mounts also. The engine will need to be moved back slighty and rear driveshaft shortened to allow the cummins cooling fan to clear the radiator. There are factory holes already punched in the frame to allow you to move the transmission crossmember back. The manual covers everthing you will encounter including wiring into factory computer. Aftermarket tranny controller by pcs was used. It was a snap for us. The tricky part is tuning the tranny. We also used a tach kit by ford cummins. Hope this helps. good luck!

Another option is to use a auto from a cummins like deputydog said. Dodge (03 and up) use the same transfercase as th superduty so you can get a 23 spline input gear for the t-case and the dodge tranny will bolt right up. I put a 12v getrag combo in my 99 and put a 29 spline gear in the t-case and all is well
