street legal

Can anyone tell my where to find out about street legality of doing a disel swap in vehicles, for instance I have seen this Toyota 4 runner with a diesel conversion on ebay, and they drive it around so I assume its street legal. Also There is this website for converting Tractor engines into full size trucks that achieve 40 MPG's.

Shade Tree Conversions at Shade Tree Conversions.

Depends alot on where your streets are. Age of the vehicle in question is a factor. Technically, according to Federal EPA regs it is illegal to tamper with the pollution control equipment on any vehicle. But that is not exactly real enforceable, again, depending alot on where your streets are. You will run into the issues if any, at the local smog check.

specifics

Does anyone know where I can find regulations on this, Or better yet someone who knows them and can interpret them. I have seen allot of unusual vehicles on ebay, ones that are driven allot here and must be legal. Also allot of European imports. Here in Texas we have yearly inspections, and your car has to be registered Etc. I have seen allot if unusually cars in California, such as a VW Vanagon with a 1.9 diesel swap, that is legal.

You might want to check this out and then have a gander at the Clean Air Act:

Just because it has a legally registered license plate on it doesn't technically make it "legal." I know my '07 with just the cat removed is not legal. But it "is" registered. Tamper at your own risk. :w2:

Yeah I believe diesels already produce less nitrates of oxygen, I believe Cat's are worthless and create problems on diesels. I'm not sure about any of the new diesel emission standards, but in Texas they don't do emissions tests on diesels. they do look though, so if the Cat is removed they won't pass it.

Engine swaps are only legal if there is a comparable vehicle configuration sold by that vehicle manufacturer on or before the vehicle's build date, or if the vehicle is more than 25years old.
