1967 Chrysler Imperial w/6BT

Well I stared a project I had been thinking about for a few years now. I have a 1967 Chrysler Imperial that had a 440 gas engine in it and just picked up a 92 6BT to put in it.:jump: I got the engine and trans from a wrecked 92 Dodge truck and heard it run before I bought it from a friend. I plan on turning up the pump up a little and then that will be it for a while. It looks like it should just drop in with a few mods to the car so I plan on having it move under its own power in about a month. I got alot of info from this site and figured some people might be interested in this as I dont think a big car like this has been done before. I will post pics tomorrow.

Sounds cool, keep us in the loop with info and pics! :c:

ya i would love to see a pic i dont know what a 1967 chrysler imperial looks like :humm:

Independent 04-11-2010 10:09 PM

Its big, real big. About 21ft long and titled at 4850 lbs. It is almost as big as the truck the engine came out of.

Sounds like an intersting project i have never seen one in any thing but demo derby condition:ouch:

Independent 04-14-2010 10:39 AM

Yeah they see alot of derbys which is sad and making them more and more rare. They are illegal to run around here because they are so tough. I have got the engine in the car to see what I will have to change and move. So far all I have to do is drop the center of the K member and make new motor mounts and the front will be in. A new trans mount/torsion bar mount needs to be made too but thats easy. I will have to tweak the oil pan to clear the steering drag link but it still isn't a big deal. The power steering lines hook right up so thats good. Does anyone know how to delete the a/c pump bracket? Is there a new water neck I can get off an industrial engine or do I just need to make my own? Here are a few pics I have taken along the way. More to come later.

This is the truck the engine came from. It started right up.

Benzer1 04-14-2010 05:56 PM

Awesome!!!!

78 fummins 04-16-2010 04:56 PM

I just cut the bottom portion off my a/c bracket to delete. I don't know about the water neck i used flexable metal hose from summit racing to make all the goofy bends for my coolant system. I did have problems with the serp belt length though. A stock non a/c belt was to short idk wat the problem was. The length i ended getten was 66 1/2 mm but it was still a little short but worked

Independent 04-16-2010 11:33 PM

Thats cool. I will probably just end up doing that too. I might put another idler pully on it to try and use the same belt but I will worry about that later. Tomorrow I attack the crossmember with a torch.:bat:

definatly a cowbow cadilac i love it my great grandpa always had imperials they were very nice cars back in the day and verry expensive to now i see most of them go to demo derbies

2MuchJunk 05-24-2010 07:03 PM

I think you might need something with as much power as a 6bt to move the thing. I am not for sure but I think 67 is one of the only cars to be ban from demo derby's. It looks like a cool project big old ugly American car ride with Big old ugly American power plus the bonus mpg.

rorybellows 05-24-2010 10:38 PM

any updates. i would like do do this with an old mopar or a continental too, but $$$ and space dictate that it doesnt

Time to ressurect this post and this project. Been down with dual hernia surgery and then working two jobs for months now so I am finally getting back to the shop to finish it. The front motor mounts have been done for a min now so all that was left was all the stuff under the car. Started with the driveshaft. Found that the yoke from the car actually went into the new trans. That was AWESOME! All I had to do was shorten the shaft about 2" and that was it. Next was the shift linkage. Took the original bracket from the car trans and bolted it to the truck trans and again everything lined right up and the shift linkage snapped right in and worked the first time. All I had to do was adjust the one adustable link about 1/2" to get the shifter to go into park and that was it, its almost too easy. All that was left was the trans crossmember and trans mount. Had to cut a notch in the original crossmember to clear the tailshaft and make new brackets for the rubber mount. Now its just fuel lines, new starter, wiring and coolant lines and we are up and running. I plan to have it running by the end of the week so videos will be posted of the first run and movement. Until then pics of progress will just have to do.

The tube on the side is to allow oil transfer from the rear part of the sump to the forward one. That way there isn't 2 qts of oil trapped all the time.

:tu: Hoodstack ?

Independent 11-21-2010 08:34 PM

Not really. Just cut it like that for the test runs. My friends wanted me to put a hood stack on it though. I figured it would blow coal all over my white vinal top after its on.

GuyWithA24Valve 11-21-2010 09:01 PM

Thats pretty cool! :tu:

Kinda reminds me of this email my grandpa sent me of a 1949 Packard with a 12 valve VE Cummins in it. It looks completely restored to stock condition, until you open the hood.

rorybellows 11-21-2010 09:45 PM

id like to do this to an older barge type mopar. was also thinking aboot a bagged, cumminsed continental too. like toomuchjunk said, big ugly american iron, powered by big ugly power.

EasternAggie 11-21-2010 10:11 PM

Looks awesome dude!! :tu:

5.9Bronco...eventually 11-22-2010 09:43 AM

subscribing. I think you are making the ultimate car. It might be completely everything proof. It could take bullets, other vehicles, or animals and be completely fine ha. I think almost everywhere they are illegal except in imperial only classes. Those classes take forever because they just dont stop runnin

beerbellykelly 11-22-2010 04:40 PM

thas gonna be such a great car when your done, the 6b looks made for that hole-if only it was that easy-
my buddy runs a new yorker and is permantly bitchin about gas prices,we all love big v8,s but when i show him this car he may get the idea-

good luck with your monster mopar.

Benzer1 11-22-2010 09:07 PM

Good Job!!! It's looking good so far. Definitely unique....

Thanks for all the comments. Unique and tank-like is exactly what I was going for. After I got the car I was looking it over and found that the front bumper bracket was made from 5/16 plate steel bent into a w shape so I knew it was a tank. I always try and build diffrent things and figured this would be very diffrent. Every time I hear my friends diesel Dodge truck I can't wait until my CAR sounds like that. I even have a custom plate idea for it.

thats great

Ran into a small problem last night. Went to put the starter in and found it hits the steering arm.:td: Anybody know a part# for a diffrent starter that will work with a 92 5.9 auto trans. The starter I have has the starter motor in the 6:00 position. It would work if it was in the 2:00 or something like that. I have also seen pics online of starters set up in a linear orientation. Would one of those work? Any imput is helpful. Thanks.

IT RUNS!!:jump::tu::jump:

Finally got some time and oil and away it went. Got an air bubble in the pump so had to bleed it but after that I shot this vid and it ran smooth as silk. Now just need to do alot of little things but plan on driving it by spring.

regr 11-18-2015 12:39 AM

Hello, I just purchased a 67 imperial and I have a 6BT sitting on a pallet , can you email me or call me , I have some questions on what you did with the starter and the motor mounts and oil pan.

Thank you.
