99 v10 installing 97 12-valve cummins
A few quick questions for ya, guys. I have a 1999 Ram 3500 v10 that is getting a 5.9 12-valve Cummins swap next week. I have a complete 97 2500 Diesel donor vehicle. I plan on swapping the complete fuel system & all the electronics forward of the firewall. So here are the few questions:
1. Is the 99 cab wiring compatible with the 97 engine compartment? (will the plugs work?) 2. I have picked up a 01 Guage Cluster from a Cummins. Will this work with the 97 Wiring? 3. Should I change the brake booster from the 99 model to the 97 vacuum system? If anyone has done something similar to this let me know. I'd appreciate the help. Thanks guys. |
i think your going to have to use the whole wiring harness out of the 97 and change over the whole vacuum system too and the gauge cluster i am not sure and by the way welcome to diesel bombers

Thanks for the quick reply & thanks for the welcome.

i am going to agree with redneck but cluster will not work you will need earlier

Ok... here's another question for ya, guys: Will the front coils from my 99 V10 1-ton dually be heavy enough for the cummins? Or should I use the 3/4-ton springs from the donor truck?
|
the 1 tons should be fine IMO, you can use a gas cluster as long as it is 94-97 with the mechanical odometer. i have one out of a 96 gas truck that will be going in my 96 Diesel, main reason is the stock tach stops at 4K, the gas runs on up there:w2: not that most people will need it or anything.....i would do the hydroboost setup if it were me, vacuum leaves alot to be desired on the brakes. also i don't think a pre98 cluster is going to fit in that dash perfect, i have never compared any side by side.

In doing some research to see if my gas cluster would work, the v10 cluster that are in 98+ trucks would work, you would need a wiring harness and pcm out of a early 98, but they are hard to come by.
|
ya i meant to put that too, but like you said finding the harness and comp from a 98 12v in a junk yard is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Well, Kudos to my Mech Randy. The Cummins is in the 99. Truck runs, wiring complete with the exception of under-dash. Brakes done, used the Hydro (thanks for the advice on that one). Should be on the road by Tues, Diesel-Gods willing. I need to get back to work. Using the factory donor truck guage package with a little mod to the 99 dash bezel.

Ok... here is the in's & out's of the transplant so far: Drove the truck today for the first time with the 12v in it. NONE of the 99 wiring works. scrapped everything with the exceptions of a few connectors. The 99 ram is sporting 95 (not a 97.. snafu on my part) wiring, fuel lines, heater core & almost everything else. Tried to use the 99 dash, but it was cracked to begin with & imploded once out of the truck. Didn't matter anyway, had to use the 95 dash due to wiring & switches. Using 99 column though. For some bizarre reason, nothing on the orig. 95 dash is working even using the 95 harnass. I must be missing a relay or something silly. Should have the truck back together & on the road tomorrow afternoon. (I sure hope so... 2weeks off work is killing me.) ----> OH! And I need an AC-heater switch from a 94-97 (Diesel model preferred, but not necessary... so if anyone has a dead truck lying around.. please, let me know what you want for it.)
