S-10 conversion
I have been thinking about pulling my 4.3 vortech out of myS-10 and putting a diesel in it. But the hold back is money. I also would like to know the price for a cummins that would fit in it. I might even go with a duramax if it would be cheaper. I know if i put a cummins in it i would have to get a new tranny, but if i would happen to go with the duramax would i have to have a new tranny? let me know.

By far the best option would be a 4 cylinder Cummins - a 4BT.
Would be impossible to shoehorn a 6 cylinder Cummins in that engine bay. Not to mention what you would have to do to beef up the frame and frontend. You will need a new tranny with any diesel conversion. These things (especially the Cummins) make gobs of torque and they will kill a stock gasser tranny in no time at all. These kind of swaps arent cheap...to do it right figure at least 5k. |
Would i have to get a new tranny to bolt up to the cummins?
---AutoMerged DoublePost--- alright that was my bad i didn't see the rest of your post the first time. How much are you guessing it would be for just the motor? |
4 BT swaps are pretty common now which makes it harder to find the parts and makes them more $$ - I can even offer a guess.

well whats the thoughts on a duramax?
|
Thats a question for the D-Max guys - sorry I dont know the first thing about them other than it wouldnt be cheap.

ebay $2500 engine trans and starter
|
Is that the 4 BT or a duramax?
|
Chances are that 2500 price tag was for a 4bt.

I finally got to drive my duramax swap, and its a TON of work. an old mechanical cummins would be relatively easy, like the 4bt. the duramax is a heavily electronic engine, you basically need a whole truck to do the swap the "easy" way. so figure on a pretty hefty price tag. mine keeps going up, anyway :)
