Chevy/Cummins swap
Hey everyone, got an old body style chevy im lookin to swap a cummins into. Been lookin everywhere online for info and it all seems pretty straight forward. Gotta notch the frame, drop the crossmemeber, make a tranny mount and run hydroboost for more clearance. the only problem is i dont have a 220 volt welder at hand and i cant make everything. im lookin for part sources on MOTOR MOUNTS. they offer something on AutoWorld but ive been told its possible to use the stock motor mount brackets on the cross memeber. Any advise?:humm:

:c:got any friends that are weldrs? we usually do side workfor beer!:c:

if the truck is an 80's call Avalanche Engineering, they sell a complete tube crossmember for about 400 bucks, its stronger and helps tie the front of the truck together better, also look at a steering box brace for the truck cause that cummins is heavy and thats alot of weight on the nose and it may rip the box out of the frame......another thing is that there is a factory cummins to chevy tranny adapter out of the bread trucks, you just got to find one.....

Chevy to Cummins
Hi, i have a 1996 chevy 1500 4x4, i was wanting to put a 3.9 or 5.9 cummins engine in it. Do you know how big of a deal it is to rewire the engine to hook up to the gages, computers, tranny, etc?

Do you really wanna easy, and cheaper way of doing your swap?
Move your body over to the other frame. Or, cut the frame in half, and re-weld it to your truck. maybe you have $8000 to do the yank, and swap way. Don't get angry with me; I don't set the prices!!! |
I did mine all with a 120v mig welder. Just beveled EVERY edge for the welds and got 100% penetration. If you take your time prepping for the welds it can be done.
The premade crossmember is pretty trick I'd check that out. |
I got a k30 and wanna put a cummins in it but am i better off to lift the body off and set it on a cummins frame?
|
you could. but then you'd have a chevy on a gay dodge frame

Anyone have any pics or know how much to notch the crossmember in a 84 Chevy for the cummins? Email me them if ya do. Gonna start on it next weekend.. malibudude1978 at yahoo . com

its easier to cut it out and build a new one out of square tubing on a 4x4. not sure on a 2x4. its at least an inch or two deeper in the oilpan area.

Well I got the cummins sat in my 84 Chevy Dually. Pulled the front cover off and fixed the KDP, pulled it right out... Looked like an oil passage so I made a tab and slid it back in.
But as for the motor mounts I took the chevy ones out and after measuring everything it will fit perfect after I cut 1 inch off the cummins steel bracket and use the dodge mounts with the chevy frame mount. May fit the same in a 4x4. Will need to notch the front crossmember a lil for the crank pulley.. |
I just redrilled the mounting holes 1 inch shorter and factory dodge mounts fit right in. And mocked the rad in and the fan is about 1 inch from the rad. Cant wait to get it done and show the "It wont fit" people that it does fit...lol

Avalanche engineering has an awesome tube crossmember for the chevy conversion. If its a 4x4 then look at west texas offroad, they have a hydraulic assist steering upgrade. Very good quality for very reasonable price. All the early GM frames are notoriously weak at the steering box. A couple of options for you are to box the frame or buy a kit. The one that I use is from Offroad designs. Excellent quality and Stephen(the owner) is a wealth of info for GM trucks. If its a 2wd then I would still look into beefing up the frame and steering box mount.
