there is one for sale locally without a trans. can a RWD transmission be bolted up to it? I thought I heard somewhere that a toyota RWD trans will work. I think it would be cool to repower my beater Nissan reg cab short box 2wd.

I don't see why not. Contact Advanced Adapters in Paso Robles, Ca. and see if they have a kit or can make a kit to bolt it up.

As far as adapters go, check in with acmeadapters.com. They have really worked the bugs out with this conversion and stand behind their product. They make the adapter for both the suzuki and toyota 22r* series transmissions, and support alot of the peripheral stuff like brackets/cables/harnesses etc.

I'd be curious as to which motor is in it. Normally asperated 1.6? "eco" 1.6? (that's basically a td w/o fuel enrichment valve on pump). TD 1.6? Or early TDI? What vw is it in?
