Massey Ferguson in a CJ5

would a Perkins diesel out of a Massey Ferguson 165 tractor ( 58 HP, 169 torque, 212 ci) be powerful enough to replace an AMC 258 ci. in a CJ5? Thanks for any help

Lots of folks, including me, run Kubota engines. They start around 46-51 H.P. before mods so you could probable make it work. The Kubota's are about 100 H.P. after simple mods and a turbo.

In the early '60's cj-5's could be factory optioned with a perkins 4-192 @62hp. The trick will be to get the tractor engine governor to rev up to automotive range RPM's.
Not sure if the MF is direct or IDI diesel. The late model Kubota's are DI and quite a bit more fuel efficient than the older IDI models.
Also depends on what your goals are for the Jeep, strictly offroad, highway, or multiuse?

but a bird in the hand adage also applies If the MF is already sitting in your shop?

already own the tractor, cranks and runs great, just too big to use, not sure the diff between DI AND IDI, and the Jeep will be multiuse as long as the fuel mileage is close to 25 on the highway or not worth the trouble. Thanks for the help
