7.3 idi part swap
 
I'd like to take the pistons out of my 7.3 natural and put them into a power stroke turbo. The reason I want to is they are a high compression piston. Has anyone done this? If so I'd like to hear the pros and cons of the project please.

The bore might fit, but you're trying to cross breeds the wrong way I think. :nope:

IDI's are aroudn 21:1 compression because of the nature of Indirect Injection, whereas the PS is around 18:1. The big difference comes in piston top design. IDI pistions are essentially flat top with a small profile for the pre-cup to expand pressure into (the injector in an IDI motor sprays into a pre-combustion chamber in the head and the gasses expand into the cylinder thus pushing the piston). The PS piston has a bowl in the center of the piston for the injection and combustion event to take place. I do not think you can put an Indirect Injection style piston into a Direct Injection motor and function properly...the injector in the PS will have nowhere to spray, assuming the IDI pistion doen't smash the tip of the injector first. There is also some wristpin differences between the NA IDI, Turbo IDI and PS, but I cannot recall offhand...

You may look into coating the pistions, milling the block and head of your PS to get a slightly higher compression ratio. :humm:

I have done a lot of research that the 93-94 turbo 7.3 idi use a larger wrist pin and different connecting rods. Remember that the injector set in the same spot that the glow plug is under that cap to protect them. The design for the 7.3 IDI Non-turbo & Turbo uses a Mexican hat design. The newer diesel uses a different piston with a bowl design where the injection sprays directly in the center of the piston with the hump in the middle of these more new pistons from the 6.0 to the new 7.3 power strokes. If you are willing to try this, get some playdough and put on the top of the piston to see where you injector and glow plug will hit.
