diesel for a 79 cherokee chief conversion

Hey Bombers!

I was just wondering how difficult it would be to remove a 360 cu in (5.9 L) AMC V8 with two-barrel carburetor from a 79 jeep cherokee chief gas and install a diesel motor, like a 6.2 L (379 cu in) Detroit Diesel V8 out of a 85 or 86 GMC gimmy its near and its $500 (is it cheap ????)

Would I have to install a different Transmission? i got a General Motors' Turbo-Hydramatic TH400 (smooth) think not sure ill fit just change the turbine

Would I need additional equipment?

do i need to modify the gear on my dif (Dana 44 model axles) got permanent four-wheel-drive QuadraTrac system tink i got a 2.57:1 low range optional on QuadraTrac

it all in working order but the gas is killing me cant enjoy it :ouch:
want to play :jump:

P.S. This is for you Dodge buffs... Would it be possible to install a cummins diesel in the jeep? No flammin' please

I think it would be a lot easier to stuff a 4BT under the hood than a 6.2 or 6.5. A 5.9 Cummins would likely require some firewall "massaging", or to push the radiator forward. With either the 5.9L or the 6.2/6.5, front suspension may be an issue due to the extra weight.

With any diesel, a tougher transmission may be in order due to the torque they produce.

The 4bt is just the 4 cylinder version of the 6bt that Dodge puts in their trucks. It is a great little engine that can make a lot of HP, but be ready to pay dearly for one, folks seem to think they are made of gold.
The 360 AMC engine weighs around 650 lbs. and any diesel V-8 is going to start at better than 1K lbs. Adding a leaf to the front springs might keeps them from sagging, but it won't help the other overloaded components.
No diesel engine is going to bolt up to your trans, there might be adapters out there, but I don't know of any.
Just swapping to a diesel for better fuel economy is not going to be wise, it'll take you a long time to make that pay off. The $500 6.5 is only the beginning, there's a lot more to swapping than that.
