Welcome aboard, you just put up a post so I don't know what he problem is, don't think you can make a new post in classifieds until you have at least 10 posts or something like that.

Thanks for responding! I admit I was a little irritated when I was able to post that short message for help. I had just finished trying to post a lengthy message on the diesel in dress forum, and had, for the second time, been denied access to that forum. The reason was that I was not logged in. then there was no recovery to save all that laborius typing that I had done to describe my problem accurately. I WAS logged in, as I specifically made sure to do so when I entered the site. I had the same thing happen when I tried to post last night, and I was denied access then and lost all my work. Computers! GRRR definitely a love/hate relationship. Is there a timer that shuts you off after a specific time has elapsed or what? Thanks for helping me, I still have a severe powerstroke problem. Dr Phil

You're posting in the distress forum so whats the problem ?:c:

Yes there is a timer. Not sure what amount of time it is, but if you check the box that says "keep me logged in" under your log in info you won't have a problem.:tu:

Thanks for the reply, tiremann9669 and H.R.D. I could not find the "keep me logged in" box on my screen tonight (log in boxes in upper right hand corner). I will look over the site tomorrow for the keep me logged in box and will try to post the problem tomorrow morning. Time to get to bed now. If nothing else, I will break up the problem in two or three posts. I do have a hard to find problem, or at least it seems that way to me. I am hoping someone on this site will be able to help. The reason I came to DieselBombers was I was impressed with the quality of the site and the apparent knowledge of the members. Thanks again for your help. Dr. Phil

the keep me logged in only appears as you are logging in, after you type in your password and before hitting the OK button check the box to keep you logged in.

Thanks, bobfbigman. When I logged in this morning ( upper right hand corner of screen) I only found a remember password box, which I checked. I hope this works to allow me enough time to describe my problem. The problem bottom line is that I have a powerstroke that will start normally when cold with no hesitation, missing cylinders, or anything else. When the engine warms up in 2 or 3 miles, it stops dead no matter what the engine rpm and you have no choice but to coast to the side of the road. When you try to start the engine now, there is no response whatsoever, not even a one cylinder hit. Now, leave it cool down for an hour, maybe 2. It will start right up normally with the same exact response as when starting cold. Now take off for home and if you are not too far away you might make it. If you are too far away, just go through the same wait and the truck will respond the same way again. It has died while I am pulling into the driveway. I am going to post now and continue the story in the next post. Thanks for bearing with me. Dr Phil

Now for some of the rest. This is a 1995.5 truck, Powerstroke 7.3, with engine SN 200945, 255,000 miles. Here are the things I have tried. I started off with the CPS as when the engine stops it feels exactly like this problem. A new motorcraft unit from the friendly ford folks. No help. Later, I tried another new CPS. Again, no help. Then I changed the oil (Delo 400). No change. Then I changed the engine fuel filter (motorcraft), and the other filters in the fuel line. ( I Racor filter under the hood with a thumb pump for priming, and a large primary filter at the bed mounted aux 125 gallon tank. No help. I checked the fuel pressure at the regulator and it seemed a little low and the pump was old, so I installed a new lift pump, changed all the hoses with new high pressure line, removed and cleaned the engine filter can and put in a new fuel heater element as the old one had broken loose, and finally cleaned the fuel regulator screen which was already clean. Fuel pressure now normal, but no help with problem. Next, I installed a new IPR and O ring, as I have had this problem before. Old one looked all right, but again with many miles on it. Truck still has exact same problem and symptoms. Time to post this.

Now some more. Since it is a hot engine problem, I needed to check the LPOP for proper pressure. I installed an aftermarket bourdon tube oil pressure gauge by Teeing off with a short pipe nipple on top of the HPOP reservoir, and keeping the factory sensor as well as my new oil line. Bled the oil line to the gauge and checked cold pressure. then I noticed that there was air bubbles in the new oil line to the gauge, as it is translucent. Bled it again and got all the air out. And again. The small amount of air keeps coming back. I now am suspecting a cracked oil pickup tube, so I overfilled the crankcase with an extra 3 quarts of oil and elevated the back. Still getting a small amount of air in the oil line. Tightened up all fittings yet again, no help. I have a Snapon brick code reader and have always had 2 codes which I do not think could influence this problem. These are P0380, glow plug ckt fault, no surprise since I have had a manually activated circuit for years with no problem, and P0476 exh pres ctrl valve perform. I think this valve must be stuck open, as I have normal power when the engine does run. Finally, I had the engine surge on one oil pressure check when at 2500 RPM, and the check engine light came on. Threw a code, ICP circuit out of range low- maybe some air going through the HPOP? That's most of the story that I can remember, but I have been working on this truck off and on for months, and the sequence of events gets a little hazy. I am going to get yet another CPS from ford and drive it some more this morning. I sure hope someone else might have some insight on what this might be. I have put off thinking about a cracked oil pickup tube as I understand the engine must come out to remove the oil pan, and I hesitate to do this without any hard evidence. Thank you all for any help you might provide. Will keep you all advised of any progress. Dr.Phil

Update from this morning. Engine started as usual, OAT 84 degrees. Shut it down and went to Ford and bought a new CPS. I had them check to see if it was the proper one (it wasnt) so they got me the right one. Went home and put it in, and truck started normally. Cold oil pressure at idle 40 PSI, brought speed up gradually to 3000 RPM. Oil pressure at speed 70 PSI. Held RPM constant at 3000 and watched gauge. Oil pressure started dropping quickly as engine is warming up. On the way up to 3000 RPM, engine surged at about 2500 RPM, check engine light came on, engine steadied back down. Oil pressure dropped steadily to 40 PSI at 3000 RPM, as engine comes up to normal temperature. Started back down in RPM slowly, and no change in oil pressure to 2000 RPM. Still 40 PSI. At about 1800 RPM oil pressure started dropping again and the engine also quit just then and speed dropped to zero with no surging, missing or anything. The engine would not start, but the CPS is good as I can see cranking speed on the RPM gauge. ???? Still looking, Thanks, Dr. Phil

Just ran the engine again, 7:30 PM, up to temperature and back. Ran OK, no problem. Check codes with scanner for previous run- another P1280-ICP ckt out of range low. No engine surge this engine run , and no check light.

cummins_guy 06-14-2012 08:33 AM

have you replaced any of the sensors,

this sounds to me that it is a sensor sending incorrect information.

pstrahin 06-14-2012 08:45 AM

Thanks, Cummins Guy, for the response. This sounds like it might be a good lead. I have been wondering about the ICP sensor on the drivers side head, and am going to check that out today. Maybe its time for a good break- I hope so! Will let you know if I hit gold or lead! BTW, I agree that Cummins makes a mighty fine engine! Best regards, Dr. Phil
