lookin at 97 12vl but loping all the time at idle even whn warm

Im new to the forms a buddy of mine told me here is the rite place for good info. I need some guesses or advice on a automatic 4x4 97 12 valve with 120,000 miles on it at a dealer ship. My first time i went and looked at it i was very suprised by the miles, but when i started it, it was loping and i figured it would go away after a couple of minutes but it didnt so i got all the info whent home and the next day i went to go look at it when it was sunny and about 70 deg out. I started it agin to test drive it, and it loped like the day before, i figured ill drive it and it will run fine but as i was pullin out on a back road i was kinda feathering the gas and it sounded like it was about to die but it didnt so i got on a frontage road and got on the gas and it sounded like every outher 12 valve, but when i came to the stop sign it had the loping agin so i had no clue why it was doin that. Because when i drove it everything was smooth anless i was hardly on the gas and stopped. I was wondering wat could cause that i was thinkin, timming, to low of a idle or pump(but after driving it the pump had no problem feeding the diesel because when i would step on it it would poor black smoke). idk if having no exhaust is the cause becaus its cut off rite before the transfer case. Or if the guy had it set that way. The dealer ship said they did not know of any mods besides exhaust. But lookin at the engine it didnt have the top plate like most 94-98.5 dodges have and the turbo looked like it sat lower in the engine bay.

Thanx: mr.diesel24:yeah:
I know its long but addvice on this would be nice so i dont waste money.

check timing
check for fuel leaks
check compression
where is your idle at?

good luck

ide go idle first. should be 800-1000 mine is a fuzz over 900. was it hard to start? white smoke when it did start? with the engine running take the oil fill cap off and see how much blow by you have dont think that would make it lope but you should check it anyways. if it poors smoke it isnt bone stock! who owned it before the dealer got it? some 16 year old kid that couldnt pay for an exhaust or the tranny that is prolly about to say goodby? take the inspection cover off or have the dealer do it with you it takes like 2 min and see if the truck has a fancy converter in it. some manufaturers paint their converters.

I have a 98 12 vavle and it did the same thing. It was loping all the time. The idle was to low. once we brought up the idle to 800 rpm's, now worries.

I live in Canada, we've had -30 degress celcius, not plugged in, cycle the heaters twice, and starts like a champ. It will lopp a bit when it cold like that until it gets constant idle, and it will smoke blue a little as it running really rich, but when she's warm, just like a hot sunny day.

I have 549000 kms(340 000 miles) runs like a top, you will like that truck.
