97 Powerstroke white smoke, no power
 

Hey guys, I have a 97 F350 7.3 when its cold out, the pours white smoke from the stack. Cant get any RPMs out of it,and wont get out of its own way untill it warms up, usualy through town. When it warms up, I get RPMs back no smoke and all the power you want. If I leave it in the garage it will start and run fine. Recently it has had a new HPOP, Fuel pump, filters, cleaned out the Oil reservoir, and EBP sensor, ICP Reg and valve. Any ideas? Thanks

Umm...No. :loco: It could be sucking air someplace but that usually goes away fairly quick once its running. I would run an injector test, they could be worn out due to high mileage or poor maintenance.

I would look for a sensor or switch that is temp. related. coolant temp. sensor? The old 7.3's advanced the timing until warm-up. Maybe the newer engines still do that but just differently. Anyway, the white smoke and lack of power does sound like a timing issue to me.

the massive amounts of white smoke is probably caused from weak/bad glow plugs on startup. have you ever looked into them?

as the HEUI injectors get old/on their way out, they become very temperature sensitive, you might have one or two on their way out. does the truck run rough until it warms up? that would explain your lost power until its warm.

do you hear a whooshing out the exhaust?

i would bet its the exhaust valve being shut. i can shut mine and it will do the samething. the white smoke is prob just from a cold start.

The truck has 325K miles on it. It had all new glow plugs put in it last winter. There is not CEL, but I ran a few tests the other night and got a few codes: cylinder 4 ballance, exhaust back pressure valve performance, and oil temp sensor

beautiful! i wouldnt pay any attention to the oil temp sensor code, probably came up when you did the cylinder contribution test. cylinder 4 injector being cold would explain the smoke when cold. and your exhaust back pressure valve being completely shut (it does this to help warm up, but once you start going down the road it should open a little or completely, depending where your foot is.) would explain the no power until its warm. unplug your ebp valve, its a 2 wire connector on the driver side going into your turbo pedistal. that should keep that valve open and youll notice an improvement. usual cause is a bad ebp sensor.
