Smoking, NOT the good kind!
 

My gen 1 has started smoking all the time. It's a bluish color so I'm figuring it's engine oil hitting the exhaust. I've read where the bushings go in the turbo allowing the lubricating engine oil to push out into the exhaust path. My oil has dropped about a liter in the last few weeks so I'm hoping this is the problem. I have no lack of power only more smoke. I've got a rebuild kit coming along with a BD 16cm housing. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me to look into?

look for blow by. take the oil cap off while its running to see if you get white fumes and pressure coming out of the engine. that would tell you your rings are going bad. hope its your turbo. you will like the 16cm housing

just beware that if it is a turbo seal it could end badly if you keep driving it.. there is a possibility it can pass enough oil to keep the truck running and or send it into runaway :scare2:

a runaway is definitely my worst fear! I'm pretty sure that the oil is staying on the exhaust side though. Hopefully I'll be rebuilding the turbo next weekend.

too bad I just sold my "spare" vehicle! A ring job will be time consuming, but hey! on the upside I'd be able to deal with the KDP! (gotta find the silver lining in everything)

I ran it and saw not excess smoke coming from the fill pipe nor felt any heavy pressure buildup. The only thing i saw coming out was what I'd consider to be a normal amount of hot oil vapor.

Did the turbo rebuild today. Only ran into two snags; 1 trying to get the centre cartridge out of the exhaust housing and 2 getting the new inside c-clips to seat properly. I solved the first issue by placing a Burnz-omatic propane torch where the exhaust inlet is and letting it heat the housing for about 20 minutes. Then I just gently tapped on the cartridge until it came loose. To get the c-clips in I used the old bushing to square them up in the bore and pushed the bushing in by hand until the clips clicked into place!

It only took about 3 hours including painting the new BD 16cm housing with VHT wrinkle black paint.

From what I can tell so far the smoke problem is gone! I'm back to the "normal" amount of coal black smoke from hitting the skinny pedal! :jump:
