No power or smoke!

Got no fuel plate the truck barely has power, it struggles up hills and only hits 23psi. Barely smokes off the line even when i want it to is almost like still being stock. Checked ofv and thats fine, i dont hear any boost leaks. It starts up fine and my soleinoid is lifting fully. What could be my problem here. It also is rough at idle. The truck shakes a lot. It only started having a rough idle with my new tc. Whats going on with it?

H.R.D 08-30-2011 02:05 PM

If is started after you put the new TC on, I would start there maybe a bad converter.

MechanicalDiesel 08-30-2011 06:40 PM

So how does my torque converter affect my smoke? It deffinitly puts more power to the ground compared to my stock converter. Could I have a dirty injector? or maybe air getting in my fuel? even before the converter change my stock wasnt very fast or strong as I thought it would be when i bought it. That even struggled up hills and barely smoked. I have a fuel leak but only when i shutoff my truck, and it leaks from a banjo on my fuel filter????? Maybe that will ring a bell with someone because im lost :argh:

H.R.D 08-30-2011 11:10 PM

If you have fuel leaking out then air is getting in. So I would fix that and see if that helps you. There are several things you can do, get the injectors pop tested. Run some injector cleaner through them, change fuel/air filters. You can do a valve slash. Those are all things you can do for cheap that can improve performance.

RanchhandTCR 09-02-2011 10:12 PM

IS your exhaust white? usually when you have rough idle its injectors thats my two cents.

MechanicalDiesel 09-06-2011 07:36 AM

Well there is some white smoke at start up, but over all there isnt much white smoke when driving if any.

RanchhandTCR 09-07-2011 11:54 PM

Ya once it warm and you still got some white smoke I bet its injectors if not what the other guy said.

MechanicalDiesel 09-09-2011 06:39 AM

Could the torque converter really cause this? Because I cant see how that would effect my truck, its seemed to be slow since i bought it, even before the new tc i had the stock tranny with a #8 plate and saw no difference. I am lost I really dont wanna buy a new tc :argh:

Re: No power or smoke!

Is your afc working? Timing slipped? Gov springs ?
Rough idle could be vibration, might check your bolts and flex plate. Check fuel pressure and pressure drop at wot.

MechanicalDiesel 09-09-2011 08:36 AM

I believe my afc is working, im getting 23 psi of boost max right now until i get a boost elbow. Timing could be the issue ive never check or done my timing. Also i havent installed my gsk yet, but i do got the 60lb springs in. Maybe it could be timing, or even my afc? How do i check to make sure the afc is working?

mysterync 09-09-2011 08:48 AM

Re: No power or smoke!

Pull the afc and rig up regulated shop air, as the pressure rises the lever will advance

MechanicalDiesel 09-09-2011 10:10 AM

Well the afc moves the full travel, Do you think if my timing is off the truck might be losing power and smoke like this? :humm:

Kraemer 09-09-2011 11:37 AM

you still running a factory lift pump? how many miles on truck?

RanchhandTCR 09-09-2011 07:37 PM

Ya your timing can affect alot even if your 14 degress off. only way to check it is put your #1 cylinder in top dead center and see where your fuel gear is sitting should be a mark.

mysterync 09-09-2011 07:50 PM

Re: No power or smoke!

Only way to check it is to use a timing tool or a drip tube, no marks anywhere will show pump timing. The pump has a timing pin, and you could set it, pull the pump gear, turn the motor to tdc push the case pin in , and torque the pump shaft back , pull both pins and try from there. But in all honesty its much more accurate to gauge it with a dial indicator. Before checking timing, I would verify my wot fuel pressure and do a volume test. It cold easily be a failed overflow valve or air entering at the fuel heater but the latter will cause hard starts

RanchhandTCR 09-10-2011 07:08 PM

If your top dead center there should be a timing mark on the gear facing its an triangle. This way is just seeing where you sit not timing. Good luck

Re: No power or smoke!

Yea, if kdp hasn't been done might be worth while to pull the cover and do it that way. Otherwise its much easier just to use the timing pin. Given its not broken or missing lol

Re: No power or smoke!

You can see the mark in white on the cam and crank. Your truck probably won't be marked like this one but this is the location of the, marks mentioned above.

I already killed the kdp, I should've done my timing while I was doing that. :argh: But none the less ill be checking that real soon when I find the time. I mean the truck has 180,000 and I dont think timing has ever been checked or touched. I just really hope to get it fixed hopefully this is the problem.

Re: No power or smoke!

That being the case I would pin the pump, pop the gear, turn it back to tdc pin the cam gear and reinstall the pump gear and torque. If you want to raise above factory timing you will have to use a dial indicator. I wouldn't exceed 16.5 deg

By the way do your valve lash. (AKA valve cleance) intake is .10mm and exhaust is .20mm. wile your doing that its suppose to be done perodicaly you'll be amazed how much itll wake your truck up to. When you have your truck in TDC in #1 cylinder do the valves accordingly you can look em up, and then pop the inspection plate of on the transmission bell housing mark the fly wheel and turn the it 360 degrees untill you see the mark and do the second set of valves. Its just a sugestion to do since your truck has 180K on her you got 320k to go if you take care of her:jump:

Re: No power or smoke!

20mm , that's a big ole gap ...
Lol just picking man , we know what you ment. Some take it down to around .017
