fair price?

Greetings bombers! I'm happy to have found your site.

Well I bought a 1993 Gulfstream Sun Voyager a week or so ago. 46000 miles on a 190hp turbo diesel Cummins. Things seemed great and probably were. Except the hoses had sat too long and had become brittle.

Got into Wyoming and heading up a small mountain and my temp shot from 180 to 230 in an extremely short time, I pulled it over immediately and noticed some white smoke coming from the back. Turns out my lower radiator hose had ripped and I lost all my water fast.

Got a tow off the mountain for $727.00 and they towed me to a local diesel mechanic who is a certified Cummins.

It took them 4 days to look at it and even though he got it started up and drove it into the garage under its own power he is quoting me 9-12 weeks and $8200.00 for an engine from cummins and $3200.00 to install it.

I've been looking on some sites, like this one, and that seems like an awful lot.

I sent the family on home in a rental but had planned to wait out the repairs here in Wyoming. Now I'm wondering if I shouldn't freight my RV home to get a local guy to work on it.

is that too much for the engine? is that too much for the install? is 9-12 weeks right?

Thanks for any and all advice you can throw my way.

i didnt realize this was in a motor home :argh:

we are doin one right now in a 2nd gen dodge, took 2 days to get it tore downand to the machine shop. when we get it back it will take 3 days to get i back together. machine shop has had the motor a week so far :td:

as long as its a b-series, the motor is the same as in a pickup. i cant say how long or much it would cost to pull and install, but it wouldnt be no where near 9-12 weeks.
