HELP!!!!

I have a 95 cummins 12v with 370 hp injectors #10 plates straight piped and im starting to experiance problems. It sounds like its missing at low to mid rpm range it runs pretty rough at low to mid rpms. with excessive smoke on acceleration injectors have 7000 miles on them. on acceleration it sounds like the turbo is surging and i can hear the miss through the exhaust and intake. Does any body think they might know if its the injection pump ot the injectors??? or how can i figure it out?
thanks
ty

Welcome aboard coldaim. I can't be much help on tellin you what this migh be but as a suggestion I would recommend one of the auto Stethoscopes to see if you can pinpoint where anything might be sounding odd. You can use it to listen to the individual injectors to see if one of them is knocking or if it's coming from the engine itself. They cost you $10 from any auto parts shop and are handy to have around.

I'm sure somebody will come on more familier with the 12V and be more help then I am though. Be sure to fill out your signature so it will show up each time without you having to type it all out.

its not in the motor its in the fuel system and whem i accelerate you can definately hear it, it sounds like 1 or more of the cylinders is backfiring out the exhuast

Are still able to use the truck or is this a problem you need help with right away.

coldaim 11-04-2007 09:54 PM

Its driving fairly.

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

Its pretty much urgent. It barely drives. The EGTs are a little bit warmer than they usually are.

This will get the quickest attention by being in here. Hopefully somebody can get you fixxed up before this get's to be a bigger problem.

Thanks, with our gasser dodge in the shop the cummins going down will be a major blow so any body able to help at all would be great.

when was the last time that you adjusted the valves? depending on the miles you have on the truck and the last time the valves have been adjusted it could be this causing the problem.

I only have real basic suggestions...

It kind of sounds like injectors to me. If you have an infrared thermometer bounce it off each of the exhaust ports on your exhaust manifold. See if there is an bug difference in temps from port to port. If one is way hotter then you probably have a leaking injector. If one is way cooler than you probably have an injector not popping off.

You can get those thermometers at Radio Shack for about $50. They work nice for diagnosing brake pulls too. :U:

change yer fuel filter and clean the screan and see what that does

LOGANSTANFORTH 11-05-2007 05:27 PM

are they cheap 370's??? are they 14 hole ones??? reason i ask, a friend of mine had an injector tip break off in his motor, ran like crap and got a valve......

Cummins Express 11-05-2007 06:51 PM

Hows the fuel pressure? Overflow valves cause interesting problems especially in a fueled truck. I would tap the line with a gauge and check incoming fuel pressure before going too crazy. A faulty O/F valve will cause very poor IP internal pressure, and consequently those injectors will not pattern right, causing your smoke, idle and midrange stumble and backfire.

I adjusted the vavles about 8000 miiles ago. The injectors are bosch 370 marine 5 or 6 hole nozzles, i was trying to limp it home last night and the motor overheated and siezed up, so now how do i try to figure this thing out?

LOGANSTANFORTH 11-05-2007 08:05 PM

sounds like she will make a good core......

Cowboy_Customs 11-05-2007 08:16 PM

Sounds to me like u might have had a faulty injector, or had a valve issue and melted a piston.

Before u use those injectors again, have them pop tested at a diesel shop to make sure they are within spec. MOST places will do this for cheap/free. Sorry to hear u lost the motor.

coldaim 11-22-2007 03:04 PM

Well its been a while since it siezed and ive priced some motors and its a little out of my price range right now so i dont what im gonna do so if any body knows of some cheper motors or whatever please let me know at my email coldaim@yahoo.com the trucks kinda got sentimental value to my dad and I so it cannot be sold so if it has to sit for five years before i get a motor in it then fine
thanks for your guys' help

Theres several websights out there that you sign up to and list what your looking for and salvage yards all over the country are linked up to them and send you prices and info on what they have in stock. Many of them come with warranties.

I'll try lookin through my links and see if i can find some of them and maybe somebody else will jump in and beat me to it here.

I know a guy is always lookin to spend as little as possible but so that we know what kind of recommendations to make here, what kind of price range are you hopin for.

Heres a link to another thread with about the same problem. He ended up gettin a killer deal on a better then stock motor. In the end this may be your cheapest source by the time you figure in all the extra's.
