6.2 problems
 

Hi everybody I'm new to this. I was looking at your site to see if anybody else had the same problems I'm having, Labor day weekend is our last camping adventure for the year, i should start by saying i have a 1982 w/a 6.2l diesel never had a problem with it, it has around 200,000 miles runs great (or did) we were about 5 miles from home with the 5th on back and when i had shut off the truck for my wife and i to have lunch it wouldn't restart. I had it towed to the nearest garage to have it looked at and they had it for a week. They called and said it needed all new fuel lines, new fuel pump,new filters, new glowplugs and a new starter. so $856.00 later it runs like crap, I brought home and spent another $500.00 to put in new fuel injectors runs better but it's still not right. It starts up missing on a couple cylinders smooths out ounce it warms up (smokes like crazy until engine is warm) idles fine but once you start giving it gas is starts sputtering, i can do highway speeds but you can hear and feel it is still missing. Now everything from the tanks up are new i don't know if their is air still in the system but you would think an 1/2 hour ride down the free way would have taken care of that or am i still sucking air in along the way. I'm running this truck with a cowl induction hood scoop plumbed into the air cleaner and have for the past year (no problems) and 3" dual exhaust no mufflers, you can really hear when this thing is not running right. have you isolated it to specific cylinders?

Try cracking each injector line at the injector while it is running to see if you can find cylinders that don't make it idle worse. Post results here.

Thanks, I tried that, its firing on all cylinders, just not well. i put a clear fuel line on between the fuel pump and the injector pump so i can check to see if any air bubbles are getting in-no air bubbles. (any more). Had it running perfect on Saturday took it on a 1/2 hour run down the highway ran perfect until i shut it off now it is missing again, when i crack open the injector lines to bleed the system it just spits fuel and air, i was told it should be a stream of fuel when all the air is gone, i have never had that yet.

How many miles are on your Injection pump?

I have owned three of these and one problem arose from the fitting for the return fuel line on top ofthe pump. These have a sort of restriction in them built in from the factory. They can fail.

dual fuel tanks? Selector valve can leak air into the system.

Bad lift pump maybe.

basically if you can not isolate it to any specific cylinder it is most likely a problem in front of the DB2 injection pump.

AROUND 200,000 MILES ARE ON IT, I PUT ON A CLEAR FUEL LINE FROM THE FUEL PUMP TO THE INJECTOR PUMP, I HAVE NO AIR BUBBLES COMING THROUGH. I HAD A BUNCH OF WORK DONE AT A LOCAL GARAGE THE NEW FUEL LINES THEY INSTALLED WERE NOT TIGHT I WAS SUCKING AIR AROUND THE HOSE CLAMPS. I FIXED THAT AND INSTALLED A CLEAR LINE SO I CAN KEEP TRACK OF WHAT IS GOING ON. I JUST PUT IN 8 NEW INJECTORS 2 WEEKS AGO AND THATS WHAT I'M HAVING A PROBLEM WITH, GETTING ALL OF THE AIR OUT. THE TRUCK SITS MOST OF THE TIME I HAVE A COMPANY TRUCK A DRIVE EVERYDAY BUT I NEED THE DIESEL FOR THE 5TH WHEEL AND OTHER WORK THAT NEEDS DONE.

The air shouldn't take this long to clear out, most likely you are getting more in from somewhere. The best way to try and locate phantom air leaks is to look for wet diesel on the fuel lines, just a hint of a leak will not really leak diesel, but still suck air.


Did you get all of the lines on the pump tight, and the main feed in the middle, that is the hardest to re-tighten. If the line at the injectors was loose, probably all at the pump are to. Get a intake gasket set, and re-torque.

I think i just about have it, i took for a run last night after i bled the lines again. it ran perfect until i get the rpms up, then you can feel it miss alittle. I put clear return lines on the injectors and you can see some air bubbles going through but not much anymore. I will take it on a long run this weekend and see how it does.
