03 cummins wont start

hi guys I was wondering, I have a 2003 dodge 5.9ltr and I cant get it started. I was told that it is probally a pump. Would that be right? I need the truck for my job and the my funds are low. I just wanted to see what the gooroos of the site thought before I spent alot of money that might not be the problem. The truck has 181000 miles on it and I put a factory lift pump on it about 6 months ago. When I turn on the key I can hear the pump come on. It died on me 4 days ago but I was able to get it started again after about an hour of cranking on the starter. I drove it after for about 2hours to the job site and it ran like it was running out of fuel. I let it run all day so I could make it home. After i shut it off I went out about 2 hours later and it hasn't started sense. Any info would be a big help I Thank you guys in advance Thanks John

do you know what your fuel pressure is? throwing any codes??:humm:

MY 2003 did the same thing to me about 5 years ago. It ended up being a couple of dead injectors. I replaced all 6 and added a good aftermarket lift pump at the same time. I have a brand new set of 03 injectors if that ends up being your problem. I will give them to you cheap if you need them. I bought them a few months ago ordered them straight from the Bosche dealer in Seatle for a buddy of mine and then he sold his truck so I'm stuck with them.

There are two main things that will cause a common rail injector to fail. One is poor filtration from the factory fuel filter not filtering enough.

The second cause would be a pressure spike caused by several things. A dead lift pump will cause the CP3 to try and take over the job of supply so the injection pump is now trying to feed all 6 injectors with constant pressure as well as trying to suck fuel from all the way back at the tank. The pump will pressure spike if it falls below a certain supply rate. When this pressure spike occurs it can crack injector bodies and nozzles causing a dead injector symptom.

sounds like bad injectors to me mine has done the same thing once i replaced the injectors it starts fine but dont run it to much until you do replace them or you will burn your pistons up!!!!

thanks guys I had a bad feeling that was what it could be. Im going to try to get it running and get it on a computer tommorrow and see if there is any codes in the computer that may tell me if a sensor is bad. Got a feeling that it isn't beening no engine light on. Thanks again :tu::argh:

just got home going out to try to start the truck on ether. checked the lift pump last night and it is working well. wondering if the fca valve would be the problem? My brother in law has a 07 cummins and was going to switch the fca valve and see if it starts. :humm:

Guys I heard that if i check the return line coming from the rail and it is flowing alot of fuel that is a tell tale sign that the injector or injectors is bad. Can anyone second that info?

The FCA usually wont affect starting, more common symptoms for the FCA are a speratic loppy idle and surging when the cruise controle is set.

Make sure if you are messing around with ether make sure you crank it for a while to build oil pressure and get oil up into the head. Starting it cold on ether is what causes scoring in the cylinder walls and valve train.

Keep us posted.
