EGT Question... Possible Problem?
 

Ok i have a quick question is 1350 egt normal in a lower setting on nuber3 setting and 3 for more responsive on my edge with attitude.

I was in 6 th gear and was aorund 1600 rpms and started sinking into the throttle and i hit 1350. Is this normal on such a low setting. And I also had 100 % defuel but that may have been due to my settings I have set at 1350 max egt.And also what would cause hi egts if there was a problem. Seems like they got higher after installing stacks on the truck:w2: any help would be great and learnung is a good thing. I do not have aftermarket turbo or injectors just bd x cold air intake and edge with attitude and 4 inch down pipe to 5 inch and 5 inch stacks.

On a stock turbo that may be a little high for just goosin it, but if you actually had your foot burried in it that sounds normal to me. Is your boost pressure coming up normal. If boost were seeming sluggish I would be sure and check for pressure leaks. They would steal power and make the truck work harder, thus creating additional heat.

There have been people report losing power with stacks, straight pipes and 5" exhaust's when they are not running enough HP to use the extra open space, but I aint goin there, that topic always gets peoples dander up.

Ya I had my foot into it and was luging the motor at first but it was floored for a little while like a at least a half a min or more. If i goose it it may climb to 1050 but if i stay in it for a while it gets hot but the 100% backdown on the monitor is that normal if it is set to start backing down at 1350 and is 1350 the highest i should get with a stock turbo. and did i make a mistake putting stacks on and getting rid of my mbrp 5 inch under truck exhaust with a muffler.

IMHO 1350 isn't too hot if it is done in short sessions ie. <15 sec at a time. the reason of the back down is because of the temp setting you have the monitor set at. also is this probe in the manifold or downpipe?

Drivin like that with the stock turbo seems pretty normal to me to hit those temps. It's gonna get worse when you add injectors to the mix. When I'm pullin heavy the first thing I do is turn the Chip off. They are great things but they do have a down side to go with the good side and that's heat. It's just a fact that HP=Heat.

Ya I just dont know. If you gain or lose from the stacks anyone else out there have stacks now and see a better performance, same or less. And egt's do they rise with no restriction and I have been told you get lower exhaust temps with a muffler. I always thought the turbo and one 90 degree is all u need for back pressure but heck they may be out to lunch. and should i put 4 inch back under the truck. to the t at least and add a muffler or not. hummmmmm:ww:

Like I said earlier, that whole larger pipe making problems is a touchy subject cause all these guys have em and they look cool, so they are gonna defend em to the death. And in theory a diesel requires almost nothing for back pressure so the open pathway shouldn't matter. That's that side of the story.

Now on the other hand, there have also been a good many folks through the years that installed the big pipes and then had to go back to a 4" because the trucks would not idle right, ran rough and overall lost power. Can't tell you why this is, just that it is.

As a general rule anything under 500hp will not show any gains with anything over a 4" pipe. Anything bigger is for looks and disputabely sound quality. 500hp and up you will need at least a 5" to move the heat out. But over 500hp your also runnin a much larger turbo so your gonna have a lot more exhaust to get out also.

OOOHHHH am I gonna catch hell for sayin these things out loud. This is another one of those Religion, Politic and oil brand subjects that folks just get fired up about.

But I swar the low end went away a little but she spools fast when the rpm starts building i can still nail over 30psi of boost 40 43 at times

On your stock turbo 30psi=good, 40-43psi=there goes the head gasket.
