truck overheated now it wont run.

i have a 99 7.3 6 speed powerstroke. i bought the truck and on the way home (3 hour ride) the engine overheated. i releaved the pressure from the resivor cap and let it cool down. i started it back up about 30 mins later and continued down the highway (had a 9' plow on the truck.) the temp guage got into the red again and it stalled out.

i got it towed and i went the nextt day with a bunch of coolant and tried to get the truck to run. i filled the resivor and i tried a shot of ether. it ran for a second and shut off. any ideas? it will just crank and not run. the fual pump is working.

thanks!

I think you probably have some type of issue before the truck ever overheated... How often do PSD's overheat?? Not often... Any codes?

is there any safety shutdowns or codes that have to be reset before it will start again :humm:

I don't think so... I would start by doing everything you can to verify the ability to run. Are you getting a "wait to start" light??

give it a try.

i checked all the fuses. and there is a fuel pump shut-off switch that i checked. i checked the codes. and i accidently cleared them. (i have a crappy code reader) the only one that wouldnt clear is a Wastegate code (which shouldnt matter to the situation) and a camshaft position sensor error

Cam position sensors are a big problem with the powerstrokes. They will crank and maybe start for a minute but then die. Sounds like two seperate issues happened to hit at the same time. My moneys on the cam position sensor

Good idea. CPS is the first thing I would change.

ha! you guys are good.

I was told by one of my local buddies that its either my CPS or IDM i replaced the CPS and it was all covered in coolant. thanks for the help! trucks started right up!
