Truck Died On The Way Home
 

I haven't posted on here in awhile but I am in need of some assistance.

I started my truck at work this afternoon to head home and I let the wait to start light go off and I cranked it over but it took a little bit to start. It was idling rough so I shut it off and started it back up and it was still a little off but better. I drove about 10 miles and I left a stop sign and when it got in 3rd gear it fell on its face and then got back into it again. It was fine untill about 5 minutes from my house which was 45 minutes after the first problem. It started cutting out and finally just died and I was able to make it into a parking lot.

I checked my water seperator and fuel came out but I don't hear my fuel pump kick on when I bump the starter. I have the Airdog 150 and its only about 1 1/2 years old so I'm not sure if its the pump or the relay. I haven't been able to check the plug for power yet because I was able to get a ride home to post this question but not able to get a ride back to my truck yet.

I dont see a fuel pressure guage in your signature. Kind of doubtful that the Airdog would fail but it could happen. Thats why is it still a good idea to have a fuel pressure guage even with a good lift pump like an Airdog.

Did you fill up recently? Could be bad fuel. Chances are pretty smil there.

I would check for power to the pump first. Maybe check codes if you have a scanner.

You need to check for pressure from the Airdog, if none check the fuse for the airdog as well as the fuel pump relay in the PDC. If you have fuel pressure from the Airdog, crack a few fuel lines to check for fuel pressure there when cranking. Also turn the key on-off three times leaving it on the third time to check for codes in the odometer window (you may already know this, but it can't hurt to post it again). My guess is a bad VP44... :ouch:

I didn't think there was a fuse for the Airdog I thought it just had that relay. I wasn't able to check for power because I could get back to my truck.

I haven't had any problems with it till I went to leave from work. There are no codes in the system.

What I can't figure out is why it seemed more like the pump took a crap the way it acted. Plus the pump always primed itself everytime I start the truck and it won't do it at all so I'm thinking its the pump itself. I didn't see any problems with the wiring.

Where could I get a relay for it at? There isn't anything around me but a Pep Boys and all they had was a flasher relay that looked the same but I wasn't sure if that would work.

Oh I forgot to say no I don't have a fuel pressure gauge anymore because I got rid of my Edge Juice

There is definitely a fuse for the system. On my setup, it's relatively close to the battery connection. It should be a 20A fuse. Can't really help with the relay though... :s:

You need to check codes. That can tell you alot. Also, like posted, verify voltage, not only to the pump, but make sure the ECM is commanding the pump to turn on. We have seen a failed ECM fail to command the lift pump. Check for voltage from the factory wiring harness the Air Dog connects to.

or you could always crack a line and see if fuels coming out.

Well it seems that my Airdog motor took a crap on me and I would like to find one as soon as I can because I need my truck so I can get to work. I called up Tech at Airdog and because it blew the fuse 3 times now and they said the brushes are probably bad.

I am assuming you have an older unit that still has brushes? If so, have you taken them out to look at them? On my Airdog unit, with over 150k on it barely has any visible wear on the brushes. Have you checked for constrictions in the fuel lines, and have you replaced the filter? If it's blowing fuses, there is frequently a simple reason as to why.

I took some advice from a person that had experience in these pumps (mishkaya) which I'm very thankful that he took the time to talk to me.

I took the pump off and pulled the 2 bolts out of the motor to look at the brushes and it was flooded with diesel fuel and grime.
