bad fuel???
 

hey in my 92 cummins every once in a while it starts blowing smoke out the tail and bogs down. i then put some fuel treatment in it and it goes away almost immediately.
yesterday i filled up with fuel and made it about a mile and it started bogging down and puking smoke. i couldnt rev it at all and had to pull over.
i emptied my water fuel seperator and put in lucas fuel treatment and it would rev right up but would go back to bogging down in a minute or so. Its never been this bad. now its parked about a mile from my house as i couldnt even make it up a small rise to get home.
i tried to start it this morning and it started up but then died. i didnt put any treatment in this morning.
i ran it yesterday and cracked the injector lines to make sure they were getting fuel and they were all spitting. other than that today i am going to take the fuel filter out and replace it and maybe get some more injector cleaner and try to limp it home at least.
any ideas??
the gas station attendant said they have had people in the past mess with their tanks.

sound likes to me that your on the right track by changing the fuel filter and adding the stabilizer:humm:

Take a glass jar with ya to the truck and drain some fuel out of the separator into it and let it sit for a few minutes. The water will settle at the top and you will be able to see what quantities of water were talkin about here.

Now let me ask the real question. You sure it didn't get filled up with Gas either by your mistake or the station filling the wrong tanks with the wrong stuff. When you fill this jar smell it to see if it has a gassy smell to it. This would cause these same symptoms in the right mixture between gas and diesel.

yeah i checked the reciept as soon as it started acting up and its diesel
ill do the water check.. Do you think im on the right track though??
or could it be something else. and what is the danger of damage to anything if it does have water and i drive it a mile to my house?
is there a better addative that might help or????

You can't hurt those old trucks, that's why everybody likes em. If it starts then drive it. Worst case you may need to clean the injectors but your gonna have to do that anyway.

It wouldn't be the first time that a fuel station had gas accidentally mixed into the diesel tanks by the tanker driver so don't rule that out yet and keep that receipt safe. It may be your ticket to free repairs if this is the case.

well i filled up a jar with fuel out of the filter.
it had a little discolor from the addative i put in i think.
i filled another jar from the tank itself and it looks goo too.

towed the truck home and now it wont start at all its getting fuel to the water fuel filter
but i havnt check the injector lines yet.
is that my next move ill get a new filter tomorrow and try again.
how do i clean my injectors?
just pull them and clean them with solvent and a brush?
ive heard of people running atf trhough their filter to clean things......does that really work.

anyway im not much of a mechanic but would like to eliminate the easy stuff before i take it to someone.

Sorry I don't know much about your year of truck. I would suggest starting with changing the filter in case it's not lettin enough fuel through and checking fuel pressure would be the next thing.

Personally I'm not for using ATF, to many additives in this modern day stuff.

Did the truck run right prior to filling up with new fuel. How much fuel did you put in. In some sort of safe manner I would pour a little bit of that fuel you collected in the lid or somethin and try lighting it with a grill lighter or somethin. I'm just talkin a very small amount. If it has gas in it the gas will ignite, if it's all diesel it won't.

Past this you get into area's of the fueling system that I'm not familiar with being particular to your truck and pumps.

One of our delivery trucks is a 92 Last friday the truck ran fine but saturday on the way to work (6 miles) it started losing power. I got afilter for it but didn't feel like replacing it then and the next time I went to start it it almost wouldn't. The filter change fixed it.

As for cleaning the injectors it is not a simple matter of cleaning the outside. You have to take them apart and clean very small holes in the nozzel with tiny drills and polish the tip of the valve plunger and the plunger seat inside. It takes special equipment to test and adjust them after they are cleaned. They are not hard to take apart for the job but if you are not equipped for it you could make them worse.

well i had hoped it would be an easy fix with the filter
i just changed that and added some fuel treatment to the filter to prime it and
i cant get the truck to start at all.
i am getting fuel to the injectors, i cracked the little bolt on the side of the line above the injectors and ran the starter and they all had fuel coming out but not even close to starting.
this truck has always started with a very short bump to the key.

do i check my injectors next? and is there any thing i should know beforei do?
