1993 dodge diesel automatic
 

My dodge diesel starting running rough all of a sudden. Runs about 10 seconds and then it seems to miss getting some fuel. Like it is skipping. Any ideas of what may be going on? Thanks tcb1

is it sucking air anywhere look at your fuel lines and see if any of them are wet or look like they been leaking and have you changed your fuel filter lately and welcome to diesel bombers :humm:

Only when warm or all the time?

Checked for sucking air. Did not find anything or wet lines. Have changed fuel filteralso.Happens cold or warm. Worst when cold. Thanks for the welcome!!

First thing I would do is devise a gravity feed rig to put known-good clean fuel into the inlet on the injection pump at idle and see what happens. If the problem persists, it's an injection pump or injector problem; if the problem goes away, it's a lift pump or fuel filter or fuel line or fuel problem.

The inlet fitting is a standard flare size. Flare a piece of tubing, put a nut on it, screw the tubing to the IP fitting, then connect the tubing to a container of fuel with a hose. Make sure it's "clean" fuel or you might cause other problems.

I have ruled out fuel and lift pump problems. Looks like Begle 1 is heading in the right direction. Checking on injection pump now.

Are you sure that it isn't just a low idle problem? It doesn't go away if you give it a little bit of gas?

It could be something like the A/C compressor or alternator kicking on after 10 seconds and bogging the engine down enough that it doesn't want to idle right.

Does the same thing while going down the road.

Sounds like an injection pump problem then, possibly a rotor return spring.


How good are you at repairing really esoteric, expensive and delicate mechanical devices?
