powerstroke no wait to start no tack

Hi. I have a 99 ford f350 powerstroke that had a bad glow plug relay. It was sticking and staying on. I replaced it with a new one and everything seemed fine when i started it. Here is where the trouble started. I had a battery charger on the driver side battery set at 30 amp. When i took the charger off the battery while the truck was running it died a few seconds later. It hasn't ran scene. When the key is on i have no wait to start light. No tach when turning over. I checked the relay going to the computer and it is getting power and clicking when i turn the key on. I have checked all fuses with a meter and were ok inside cab and under hood. Here is what i have found the fuel pump is not running when the key is turned on & the glow plug relay is getting power from the battery side and the 2 small wires have power with the key on. From what i have read the computer sends a ground to the relay to kick it on. I have 3 hot wires with the key on no ground. Pretty lost here. Ive been reading everything i could find but no luck with my problem. I have also changed the cps & the batteries. All fluids are full and i topped off the hi pressure pump on the front of the motor. I had a friend that works at a truck garage try to check for codes but the computer would no show anything. It was a snapon This truck is really beating me up. Hope you guys can help. Thank you

From what you are describing sounds to me like a ecm problem something with the charging of the batteries and pulling the charger off may have caused a voltage spike and fried the ecm. You mentioned hooking a scanner up to it. Did you just check for codes and find none but did you also look at a data stream? That would give you an idea of what the computer is doing.

He said that there was codes i think 7 but it would not show them on his scanner?. Im not sure about the data steam. I will ask him. What is an ECM?. Thank you very much for your help.

No problem the ECM=Electronic Cotrol Module basicly the trucks computer. That is odd that the scanner listed codes but did not show what they were and 7 codes is quite a bit to be stored. With they sympoms that you are describing with the scanner as well makes me think more about it being the ecm being that the two cannot communicate with each other. Being able to look at the data steam would def give a good idea of whats going on there.

I think i will try to get him back out to try to check for codes again. I did take both battery cables off for about 15 min while working on the truck. I think i read that having the battery cables off clears the computer?. Thanks for your help

I checked the fuel pump by running a hot wire to it and it kicked on. So i think its just not getting power from the computer. Anyone on here ever ran into this? Thanks for your help. Don

Back again. Anyone have any ideals on what might be the problem. Thank you for your time.

If he can't access the ECM to check for codes or there are codes related to an ECM issue, then it needs replaced. What you can try, is run a piece of 6 or 8 gauge wire from the ground terminal to one of the bolts to the ECM. If the truck starts, found the problem, if not, need a new ECM.

Agreed^ All your symtoms point to that. I have had a computer relay on my gasser plow truck that would click and sound fine, but it was only letting 2.4 volts thru.
