Billowing white smoke then stops

Upon startup my 6.5 TD blows white smoke which I know is ok if it's for a second or two but it runs rough until I give it some gas. Then it seems to clear whatever fuel was in there out and stop blowing white smoke. Then yesterday after I started it up after it had been sitting for about 1 hour, it was running really rough. I had a tandem axle flatbed with a vehicke on it and when I took off down the road it was like I was putting out a smoke screen of white billowing smoke. I slowed down and pulled over opened the hood and everything looked normal. I got back in the truck to turn around and then the truck ran beautifully with no smoke. I know this is characteristic of a faulty fuel injector. I just would like to know if I'm going to mess anything up or how to test which fuel injector could be the culprit. Any other input would be much appreciated. 6.5 TD 1995 Chevrolet. Thanks guys!

sounds like a injector to me. you could have them popped tested. i would replace all of them instead of one at a time.

White smoke, rough idle when cold is normally an injector issue. What you can do is when you first start it in the morning, loosen one injector line at a time. When the engine runs the same with a loose injector line, you found the injector.

Keep in mind, if you decide to have the injectors overhauled, do your injector pump at the same time. Otherwise the higher pressure required to open the injectors will take out the pump (seen it happen quite a few times).

what about coolant? I have been adding coolant here and there. Could it be a leaking head or intake gasket leaking coolant into the cylinders? I'm guessing that is what's going on. that would do all of the same things. where would a guy pressure test to see if a he's got a leaking head or intake gasket?

Does the smoke smell like fuel or no smell at all? You can get a radiator pressure tester from the auto parts to pressurize the system to check for a coolant leak.

check radiator hose when you first start up to see if its hard. you probably need new injectors and glowplugs bad though
