Failing Injector Pump
My question If the VP goes out, will a code pop up? I recently installed a new Glacier kit on my CTD. My Quad Recon indicated that the stock lift pump was on its way out (pres between 0 & 15 psi) and every once in a while I would get a low fuel pres code. The vp is original with 140,000 miles. After installing the new lift pump I had a problem starting if the motor was hot, but once running it ran great. I am not getting any codes and the lite is not coming on. I took it to the local dealer and the mech hooked up the scanner and literally 60 sec later he said bad vp. Does the Oem scanner work that fast? Am I being hustled? I went to my buds shop and hooked up his just updated snap scanner and I get no bus and a tranny code pops up. Lite comes on and he can’t clear it. I used my autozone scanner erase the code check for codes and get no codes. Same problem. Hard to start. Contacted Glacier and Richard said the vp might be bad due to running low fuel pressure. Is my vp going out? |
I know on my 02 it will flash an 0216 code. The 99's dont have the option to cycle the key three times so you will have to get them read. If your lift pump is bad long enough it WILL take the VP44 with it. It is definetly the common problem on the 24V but once you fix it you should be goo. Besides this could give you an excuse to get a new Stage 1 or 2 trik VP, I heard they are awesome!!

It's not uncommon for the VP to be bad and not throw any codes. And your problem of not starting until the pump cools off is a classic symptom. Your mechanic should have told you what codes he found. If he was a Cummins or Dodge dealer, there are codes that only the dealer scanner will detect.
At 140,000 miles you got some good life out of the stock pump and the odds are pretty good that it's comin time for a replacement. Generally to go along with that no hot start problem you will also notice a lack of power and fuel economy goes to heck also. If you have decided to replace the pump you can test this just to be sure in your own mind if it is the pump or not. When it's and won't re-start run a hose over the injector pump for a few minutes then try to start it. If it start's then you know the pump is bad for sure. But only do this if you have already decided your going to change it, cause if it's not bad this could make it so. I milked a few months out of mine by carrying a cooler of ice water with me to cool the pump down when I needed it to start. This gave me time to save some money. |
Forgot to add, that those few months I kept mine running by cooling the pump off, it never did throw any codes.

I researched for about a week waiting for money and ended up going with Industrial Injection, great service, price and product.:up: There are a lot of great after market companys out there. Make sure you call them, don't just order off the website. Trust me. |

i love my stage 2 pump from gus at farmboy, get 20 + mpg on the highway and down to 7.6 in the city (lol thats with it to the floor all the time) it fuels like crazy but make for a rough idel and then some 9 i think its the same pump pete was talking about earlyer

Industrial is some good guys! I use them for most of my pumps. Got their stage 2 CP3 on my 06.

Lostnwalmart I was talking about your pump. I have an II HRVP but if it would have been availible I would have went with the new Stage 2 .

The older trucks (2000 and older) won't show codes - they have to be scanned with a tool to do so unlike the newer ones where you can use the key on off thing.
If the VP dies it can and can not code depending on what caused it to puke. If you are going to the trouble of getting a new VP spend a bit more $$ and get the blow by bottle relocation kit from Cummins as well. Install that (which you need to have the VP off for) and this will result in no more crap on the front of the block. VP = $$ but with the right goodies installed they will last for a long time. My VP went on my truck at 80,000 km and I had that replaced then installed a FASS 150 and then installed a full gauge package. The FP has never dropped below 13 even with the stage 5 sticks i have on board. |

It's a cummins part number that i don't have in front of me at the moment. Go to a cummins shop and they can point you in the right direction.
