2004 Ford F350 PowerStroke changed oil and fuel filters and wont cold start

2004 6.0 Changed fuel and oil filters, went to start it ran rough went out this morning and it was very very hard to start got running and nothing but black smoke shut off and tried again got going barley held throttle about half way got warm and runs just ok when warm at about 2,000r's it seems like it is running out of fuel. When I turn the ignition on the fuel pump goes on but it sounds like I have air by the engine mount fuel filter.Had friend come by with same truck and changed cap on motor and still sounds like air.It is shooting of two codes one 0223 Tps sensor switch B circuit range performance problem and two 0232 fuel pump secondary high.PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fuel pump secondary circuit high can be part of the issue. Check fuel pressure. You need to be over 50. Also, do you have a scanner that will read ICP? Are you building ICP? How about main oil pressure? Are you registering oil pressure on the oil pressure switch while cranking?

Yes I do have oil pressure when cranking over and no do not have icp tester?

Ok, so you are getting low pressure oil from the main oil pump. We just need to find a scanner that will read ICP so we can see if ICP is building up. If not, then you can have a bad HPOP, bad IPR, or bad ICP sensor.

Check fuel pressure yet?

No have not checked fuel pressure yet, where could I get Icp scanner, and what is hpop, ipr, icp sensor sorry for the stupid question,Thanks for the time.

All are related to the high pressure system. HPOP is high pressure oil pump IPR is injection pressure regulator and ICP is injection control pressure sensor. The IPR controls the oil pressure and the ICP tells the computer what the oil pressure is. These engines use high pressure oil to push a plunger in the injectors to spray the fuel. Fuel pressure is a different part of the system.

What about the air that sounds like it is coming from the secondary fuel cartridge area?

Our Ford has a 7.3 and since the fuel and high pressure systems are designed differently than the 6.0 I am not familiar with yours. There is nothing on the 7.3 that I know of that could sound like air around the filter unless it is air leaking from the intake manifold because of turbo boost pressure.

Thanks,Grady 7.3

I have found two really good websites that explain the high pressure system used on fords.
Diesel-Central.com the technical source for Diesel Truck information, Truck Pulling, and Drag Racing
Trouble Shooter | Motor | Find Articles at BNET
They might be of some help to you in finding your problem. I used a high pressure gauge from a dive regulator set to find part of the trouble with ours.
