99 ford f250 cranks hard
i went to start my truck after work and it cranked longer than normal. i have heard that this will happen when glow plugs are bad or when the glow plug relay is starting to go. can anyone help me tell me if im going in the right direction or not

if you have a test light or multimeter it is easy to check the glow plug relay. it is on top of the engine next to the fuel filter. with the key off one of the heavy terminals will have power. When you first turn the key on the other one should also have power. You can unplug the wirng from the valve cover and check the continuity of the glow plugs. it will be the 2 front and 2 rear terminals on the gasket plug. The other 4 terminals feed 120 volts to the injectors to fire them so care must be used. Old oil can also cause problems with the high pressure oil pump which can cause hard starts and running problems. Our 2002 had a bad high pressure oil pump that made it hard to start and it would loose power going down the road. If you can get a pressure gauge and hose to hook into the high pressure port in the head you can check for proper pressure. I used a dive tank gauge with a 1/2 inch o-ring thread to test ours. A scanner to read the codes would also help. Bad o-rings on the injectors can also cause hard starts bad running and excessive oil consumption.

the trhas a fresh oil change and has plenty of power. when should you change the glow plugs on those engines.
|
You only need to change them if they burn out and if only one is bad only replace the one.Unlike spark plugs in a gas engine they are only used for starting and have no effect after the engine is running.

did the glow plugs fix the issuse. could be hpo bleeding off due to bad o rings. seen it alot

This sounds stupid but my freind had one that started hard so he bought new batteries and that was it but it didnt turn over slow like week batteries do.

Would bet on a high pressure oil leak, or the HPOP reservoir draining down, on the OP's question.
