2003 48RE slip in between 1-2 upshift

I had to park my truck for a couple weeks while off work and started driving it again and noticed a longer time in between my 1-2 shift. Now it really is getting bad, so I changed my tranny fluid last night and noticed about a 2 inch long piece of what I believe is a snap ring. Any ideas on what I should do? Money is really tight and I can only afford a rebuild kit but dont know much about rebuilding autos. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

how much money do you have to spend. you can buy a suncoast rebuild kit for it which will be better than stock. if you are doing it yourself that will save you money. i rebuilt two Allison and it wasn't that hard just make sure you watch where everything goes and buy a manual in case you have any trouble.

Mine does the same thing. There is a solenoid that craps out. Costs about $100 to fix.

If you want to do it yourself the hardest thing to do is align the splines in the overdrive clutch pack. If you have a friend in a tranny shop it would be in your best interest to get help with that part. That being said I have done it myself by making tools to compress the springs with the pack in the tail housing and used the intermediate shaft to align them first. Tricky but dooable. do yourself a favor and get a repair manual when you get the kit. It saves pulling out your hair in the end.

Thanks for the responses. I dont have much more than $500 to spend on the tranny right now. I have found a complete rebuild kit for around $300. I did some google searches for 48re manuals or rebuild manuals but came up with manual valvebody information. About the solenoid you were talking about, do you know which one and what the symptoms were that I can compare to mine and that might be a cheaper and easier fix? I dont know any tranny guys is the problem and was hoping to find one some where that would be willing to help me rebuild the tranny.

I got the parts for our truck from a tranny parts place with a strange name. They are called "Whatever it takes transmission parts inc." Theyr phone number is 800 940 0197. they also have manuals.
