Starter Sticking!
 

Ok i have put in a new ignition switch, and key lock cylinder in my 94 6.5 diesel. Tried to start the truck today after getting the switch and lock installed, the damn starter stuck on again when i turned it to start. I cna even turn the lkey to off and pull it out of the ignition and it will still be trying to crank the engine over. WTF is goin on?? The starter is only a year old, but it is a chinese ebay job that i only paid 100 bucks for. But when i plug the power back up via battery cables to the truck the starter is off. It is only when i turn the key to start is when it sticks on. SO the only two parts of the system left that could be in question is the starter itself, the starter solenoid, and the batteries. I really hope i havent burned the starter out, i really want to limp it till i can get my OEM starter back from being rebuilt for the new engine that will be goin in in a few months. What do you guys think. Tomorrow i am going to take the batteries to the auto store and get them tested. They are old, and have sat around in the truck before i started drivin it. I really need to fix this before monday... PLease help......:humm:

Very likely the starter contacts are sticking. I very much doubt that the batteries are causing this problem.

I would pull the starter apart and see whats going on. Get some Heavy Duty contacts (under $10) and have them on hand in case you need to replace them.

I have another starter but the case is cracked. Can i swap the solenoids?

But yes, you can use parts off the other one for sure.

SHould i just buy another starter? I need this truck back on the road quick. I really just want one to get me by untill the engine swap in a few months...

The contacts are in the solenoid. There should also be a plunger and the replacement parts look like this:

should point out that Im familiar with Cummins parts not Chevy. I would imagine they are very similar tho.

Why not try fixing it first? Its up to you I guess.

x2. I'd swap parts out of the other one into the crappy ebay one. if you replace it get a napa reman with the lifetime warranty and any problem say it creates excessive heat or draws excessive amperage. The bench tester can't accurately test either. :U:

hat about using a ford solenoid?? To make my solenoid on the starter a dummy solenoid? Will the ford ones be heafty enough? You know like the ones they mount on the fender? That way i need to re-route my signal wire to the ford solenoid, and then one side to the battery and the other to the starter? THus will also create a quick disconnect so i can pull the signal wire if the starter sticks on, which it shouldnt, due to everythign else in the ignition is new...... Yay? Nay? DO they use them in the ford 7.3 diesels?
