2005 Ram 2500 HELP!!! lots of smoke and nasty KNOCK!
 

I'm new here so i need a little help. Got a 2005 Cummins that the other day when pulling my gooseneck trailer loaded with my telehandler with paltform. Noticed my power was not there as much. pulled up to stop sign pushed in the clutch and a nasty knock started and when i went to take off noticed a lot of black smoke ( constant smoke too) and a huge loss of power. Thought it might be my banks kit so turned it off and no change what-so-ever. Got to the jobsite unloaded and started it up again and same thing but noticed it started really hard. also noticed underneath that from the blow by tubes there was quite a bit of oil. Called the dealer and they said it was probably the injectors? Could this be all or do you think there is more problems? I pulled it into town with our 06 cummins and dropped it off at the dealer. any help would be appreciated or any suggestions thanks!:humm:

Just heard back from dealer and they said they have to pull the head off cause they think it's either a broken rod or piston. They said it was probably caused by an injector sticking? they are going to check it out and guy said possibly get a new motor out of the deal?

Ugh it sure sounds like a cracked tip. And how far did you drive again after the *Wow look at all that soot* event?

The Knock is the piston coming back to top dead center with a bunch of un-atomized diesel which is uncompressable. The effect is in short much like the beginning stage of hydrolock. The schock comes from the rest of the engine forcing that "dead" cylinder to compress its contents, sending a shockwave down through the piston, wrist pin, and the knock is the rod journal and crank shaft journal collectively clanking together (Nasty for bearings). The soot you see is the obvious unburnt fuel being released. In very bad cases pistons crack, rings break or even worse ... a block with a view. The last scenereo comes from majorly overfueled trucks.

wow that does not sound good. I drove it ( limped it about ten miles) only because the shoulders were soft and there was no place to pull over and with a 45'gooseneck with 20,000 lbs on it not a good idea to pull on the shoulder. Anyways the dealer is going to look at it on monday and they also said it could have originated from bad fuel which cause debris and gunk to either clogg an injectors or completely blow one out? IDK kinda new to diesels but love this cummins so i will keep you posted thanks for the useful info you guys are great.:U:

do not believe this.....they will try and claim it was bad fuel and it was your fault....if the engine is under warranty tell them it needs to be replaced......not rebuilt, replaced with a new one.....

Yeah hopefully that is the plan my buddy works at the dealership so he is gonna make a few calls he said and hopefully i have it in by the end of the week. I'll keep yall posted.

Ya better hope they don't notice the Banks crap on there. That'll void your warranty for sure.
Oh by the way Banks isn't all it's cracked up to be. There are a lot better products out there.

They know it is on there but they sold it to me that way w/six gun i should say and they assured me i would be covered by them and cummins. so i should know tomorrow if not i guess we will just have to wait and see. I also got that in writing too so i believe i pretty much covered my butt in case they try to go back on their word i just gotta show em the document.

Well got the news yesterday afternoon about my truck:madd:Turns out that the #6 piston actually melted. I have never seen a melted piston before but it was melted. Also the head had aluminum welded to all the valves because of the piston melting i guess. So they are getting a new motor on order for me now. Looks like i gotta wait a couple more weeks for it. so if anything changes i will let yall know.:argh:

Forgot to tell yall that they said the main cause of it all was that my injector stuck open maybe two stuck open.:booo:
