my brake squeak, bad. they do it during normal driving while slowing down to a stop. they wont squeak if i get on the brakes HARD. but they do it during normal driving
this is for a 05 ctd with 45k
ok short of replacing stuff i cant think of anything else to do

1st, i pulled everything apart to check the pads and rotors for wear, pads have lots of meat, not even close to the "squeakers". the rotors dont have any grooves and have plenty of meat. so i cleaned everything with brake cleaner and reinstalled. stopped for the couple stops i make on the way to work, but then started happening again.

2nd, i pulled them apart and sanded the pads in a cross hatch pattern and reinstalled after cleaning it all. again, got out of my neighborhood fine then they squeaked again.

3rd, pulled all apart and swapped the sides the pads were on, driver/passenger, and cleaned everything and reinstalled. this kept them quite for a couple days. now they squeak again

WTF is wrong? also i assume this wouldn't be covered under drive train warranty?

The squeak your hearing is actually a high pitched vibration that occures between the caliper and the back of the pad where its metal on metal. They make some blue stuff thats like silicone that you apply a thin coat of to the back of the pad and this will stop your squeak.

really? i have never run across this problem on any other vehicle
have any idea what its called so i can buy some?

your right, some vehicles don't have this issue...just replaced my front pads and didn't use the silicone stuff and its fine. Had a Honda once and when i bought pads for it, it came with little packets of the silicone.
Ask at your local parts place what they carry to eliminate the squeak.

Make sure you lube the pins good and apply a thin coat behind each pad.

hmm i didnt realize that was supposed to be used on the back of the pads
i have that stuff for lubing the pins on my other vehicles
guess ill just pull them apart and add it to the back of the pads

Alot of people don't know about it and some never have an issue with the squeak but its cheap and easy insurance any time you do a brake job.
