CAT 3126 NO POWER PLEASE help!!

Hi and thanks for reading, I am new to this site and thought I would see what everyone had to say here before I take this thing to the dealer to get raked over..

I have a 2003 motorhome with a cat 3126, Well I put this thing away last fall it ran fine, sits for 4 months now it has no power at all, will not go much faster than 20mph.. I tried changing the fuel filter did not help,,

Also check engine light is on and the engine protect light comes on right after startup..

also does not start right away either.. AS I said it ran fine when I put it in storage..

Thanks

:humm: sounds like it is going into limp mode
don`t know anything bout cats but here is a bump for ya and hopefully someone with some experience with these can help ya :U:

cumminscontrol 04-06-2009 08:17 PM

it is in limp mode, better take it 2 a CAT dealer...i used to work for CAT

Yamaha24 04-06-2009 09:14 PM

limp mode

Thanks for the response, I understand the limp mode,, BUt what I do not understand is how you can park something runing fine come back 4 months later no run.. a little strange.

First time I have ever dealt with that with a diesel..

I know it needs to go in just was hoping somebody had an idea before I go lay down 115.00 an hour.

Thanks

To be honest this site is targeted toward the big 3 diesel pickup applications. I wish I could help you out but Ive been here from the start and I dont ever recall much, if any discussion of CAT problems.

Things to look at are the throttle position sensor, fuel filter (which I see youve already changed), and air filter.

I did a search for you and found this: http://www.woodalls.com/CFORUM/index...g/19923088.cfm

Thanks sorry to intrude... I do have one of those 07duramax but that runs fine.. wish my cat ran that good:humm:

Your not intruding at all - we welcome everyone. I am cetainly not trying to direct you to another site - just trying to find you an answer for your Cat engine problem..

Wonder if the harness got attacked by mice or they built a nest inside the engine.

Dr. Evil 04-06-2009 09:59 PM

Dont know what kind of climate he lives in - could be algae in the tank, or even fuel line issues.

wildbill 04-06-2009 10:00 PM

Another thing you can try is clean all the harness connections that you can get to.

You also check all the fluids before you fired it back up??

Power Service has a biocide that deals with such. Dump a little of that in the tank.

I kept it stored indoors,heated... normally it stays in an unheated garage always started fine those years the year I decide to treat it nice and keep it indoors heated I get a problem go figure.

It was harder then normal to start this year for some reason, I did add 45 gallons of fresh fuel wouldn't that help if the fuel was bad? all the fresh I mean.

I just found out about the whole algae thing about 6 months ago from a buddy who got it in his pickup he travels all over the country, is the algae only found in certain parts of the country?,,, I live in the midwest,,

All fluids are great, JUST really strange how this happened makes me think a critter did something but the buiding it was stored in is occupied and fairly new maybe 3 years old o it is pretty critter free..

thanks

if you can get the code number you might be able to fir out. i sell downloaders for big rig but i dont know what size your end is. is it a c 9

gone ropin 04-06-2009 11:23 PM

that bio cide by power service works really really good, have extra filters on hand you will be changing it on the side of the road, been there done that,,

check your water temp sending switch its either a bad end or a bad sensor or transducer, dont be afraid to pull on the wires, this is usally the culprit,:ok1:

Have had problems in the past with CAT engines in heavy equipment that sits for a while running like crap with no power, if it has a HEUI injection system on it. The high pressure oil rail will bleed off and have a huge air pocket in it,I have had to run some engines for over a half hour after installing a new HEUI pump or after it has set a long time to get all ogf the air out. best to have ET, which is CATS computer system that you hook up and check for codes and you can check injection actuation pressure, do solenoid click tests and cut out the injectors. If it is not a HEUI and is a MUI or EUI then I would check your fuel for algae, gelling, and change all of the filters, it could have messed up one of the sensors and something as simple as a fuel pressure sensor will cause the engine check light to illuminate and run crappy. Good luck

gone ropin 04-07-2009 08:38 AM

dang forgot about the useing engine oil as a hydraulic fluid now ya know where ford got it,yup gotta have ET on your laptop [ 750.00 ], and the communications adaptor [1,000.00 and up depends on hard wire or wireless] and you can only do limited stuff unless your a certified cat tech w/ the factory passwords and good luck w/the cat dealer

If the stop engine and check engine light came on, shouldn't run for maybe 15 sec after startup.

Algae I think!

Well I sure appreciatte everyones imput and trying to help this newbie out.

I think it may be algae, first time ever dealing with it but I took off the new filter and dumped it out and a bunch of little black particles are inside of it mixed in with fuel, Does everyone agree that this would be algae?

I am going to go and buy some algae remover,, and a few new filters.

how long does it take to get all this cleared up?

Thanks again I am glad I found this site I will have many questions coming about my duramax..

No I believe the little black particles are Ashphaltenes....:

holy cow that looks like what i just went thru with mine after sitting for 4 months waitnig to buy a new injector pump :argh: :se:

Yamaha24 04-19-2009 08:48 AM

Thanks everyone for your input I gave up and brought it in, needless to say I had a pretty hefty bill as expected whole reason I came here.:madd: always over 2K everytime!!

ECM was gone, one of the first questions they asked me after they determined it was bad was.. Did I jump it this year? Well the engine batteries were shot this year, so there is a battery jump switch where you use the chassis batteries to "jump" the engine to start it, this is what I did and that is what the switch is for, So my question is what they said true about jumping the engine??? If so why would they put the switch?? well anyways it is fixed... I did put new batteries in though and will never use that jump switch again:humm:

wildbill 04-20-2009 08:25 PM

So, did ya'll get er going??

wildbill 05-01-2009 02:24 AM

Assuming the issue has been fixed. If it redevelopes, can reopen the thread
