not charging right

ok guys ive put a total of 60 miles on my truck for break in. the problem im having is it aint charging woth a damn. two new interstate batteries and new ground cables and power between cables. the truck made 14 volts before disasembling with higher rpms now it drops below the first dash mark, any ideas

Not sure on the 94 but on my 98 the voltage regulation comes from the PCM.

How many volts are you getting at the battery terminals??

94cummins12v 03-25-2009 12:31 AM

dont know havent had time to hit it with a multimeter, hopefully in the morning i was just wondering if anyne had any quick thoughts

Dr. Evil 03-25-2009 12:39 AM

Im not sure if there is an external voltage regulator on a 94??? Whitmore might know.....

Could be the alternator.....

94cummins12v 03-25-2009 12:44 AM

is the external regulator the little black box on the back of the alternator?, i know the alternator was doding 14 voltes at higher rpm before taredown, but it aint even close now

Not sure on this but it is worth a shot, I had the same problem on my 79 gmc after I put it back together and no charge, it ended up being the signal wire coming from the battery to tell the alternator to charge, good luck and hope you get it fixed.

ok guys i made a jumper wire from the rear of the alterbnator to the battery and that was the problem, its getting the full 14+ volts now. i just need to figure out whick wire aint conected. I COUNT MY TRUCK ON FIRE:argh::argh: dont use 18 guage wire as a jumper when doing this proceduere it ends up badly

---AutoMerged DoublePost---

ok i traced the wires tomight and there was a little fuse in the fuse block that is shot i think that might be the problem

stkdram55 03-26-2009 12:20 AM

what caused the fuse to trip?? I would check that wire and make sure it aint chaffed thru somewhere and shorting out against something

its all wraped in loom, everything looks ok, it may be a few things, touching wires together, grounding out that stud on the oil filter housing when tightening the bolts, if it pops it again then i ll start replacing more wires, i still cant belive i cought the old girl on fire though

stkdram55 03-26-2009 12:51 AM

yeah wouldnt that be a bitch, ya put all this work in that truck and ya burn the mofo to the ground troubleshootin something:argh:
