04.5 cummins fuel gremlin
I have a 04.5 cummins 6sp and i have a problem. I have been a gas engine man my whole life so i don't know a lot about diesels. My truck will run fine for 2 or three hours and then it will fall on its face and refuse to start. I then put a quart of diesel 9/11 in the fuel tank in case it was a gelling problem. I recently changed the fuel filter. The old fuel filter was black. I then proceeded to crack the low pressure side before starting. It then started and ran for about three hours. I crack and bleed all the injectors twice once it started up and again in an hour. It ran good no hick ups what so ever. I tried to start it up this morning and it fired up for bout 2 min then refused to start and white smoke was coming out of the stacks. Anybody have an idea what is wrong with the oll girl any help would be appreciated.

well yer lift pump could be toast, yer Cummins may just be pullin past it the ocasionally loosin suction
you also could have a leak in one of yer fuel supply lines or the pickup tube inside the tank..........allowing to pull some air in and break the suction |
Yeah it sounds like the lift pump is week.
If u want to test the transfer pump- pulled the rubber feed line to the injecton pump and put it into a cup. have someone bump the started for 10 sec and u should have between 650Ml and 720Ml. anything less than that u need to replace the transfer pump. Word to the wize dont crack the injector lines- coming out of those lines is between 8,000 and 20,000 psi. Sorry dont mean to be a jurk but that pressure will kill someone or take off fingers. On the CR cummins u dont have to crack the lines do to the injectors being fired by the ecm. When bleeding air just bump the starter and the transfer pump will run for about 25 sec. do that about 3 to 5 times and the vehicle should start. |
