Transfer Case all brokey

Sunny greetings on this fine Sunday morning from a Best Western In Annawan, Illinois. I have a wee bit of a problem here. Last night about 9:00 local time I managed to blow High range out of my transfer case. Does anybody know what could have caused this?

It started about halfway through Nebraska. When I would go up a hill the truck would be fine, however as soon as I leveled out or would go back down hill the whole truck would jerk and the T-case lever would jump. IT kind of acted like it would jump out of 2h into neutral for a sec and then snap back in. I found that some light pressure on the lever would keep it from doing that.

Well that lasted me about 6-7 more hours of driving then about 9:00 it just went out
totally. No 2H or 4H. I've got 4L but that limits my speed to about 30 MPH.

I was headed to Michigan to my brother who lives near Leslie. I've got a 20 ft Gooseneck with a 70 Chevy pickup strapped to it. However the brakes on the trailer don't work and I'm pretty sure the old chevy won't pull(or stop) it worth a damn.

Anybody know what might have caused this? I might have to stay here another night and see about getting it fixed tomorrow because I didn't bring any tools with me. :argh:

Thanks for your help guys.

Well, what you're describing that started it sounds like what happened to me. The nuts on the studs that hold the T-case on loosened up on mine. The thing was fine under load, but once you just let it coast it would vibrate real bad, and the T-Case lever would bounce all over. I caught mine before it walked out too far, but you might not have been so lucky. It probably took out the planetary set from the sounds of it. Time for a full rebuild. When you put it back on this time use either loc-tite red, or Stage 8 locking fasteners.

Shift fork is wore or bent. Time to find a good used or remand t-case I'm afraid. You can limp along in 4L for a while.

i think its shifting fork. mine had rubber tips on them and one fell off letting one leg of fork rub. after it wore it would not stay in. i tore it down and replaced fork and it was good as new

dont make any expensive dicisions just yet do some serching, most junk yards want almost a grand for a used one, remans will run you about 1200 search ebay craigslis. i wish i would have kept all my parts out of mine, i blew the case up last month in mine parts were fine, i found a 241dhd in excelent condition off disel bombers for $300, just had to swap input shafts

so was he in 4H when this happened or what......this kinda crap always worries me cuz then i have no clue if itll happen to me

I was in 2h when it went. But now 2h and 4h are gone. Nothing there. Talked to a local Tranny shop called Peeds. They are going to pull it apart today and call me when they find out what happened.

From talking to them and describing the symptoms they think the shift fork might have broke. I'll know more later.

CumminsCrazed 02-24-2009 10:38 AM

so what did you ever find out?

kazairl 02-24-2009 10:59 PM

It is Major Fubar. Shifting ring broke in half. Planetary gears have teeth broken off. Shift fork is screwed. Sun gear is busted and the chain has a broken link.

Basically needs a new one. Called my buddy back home and he is coming out to pick me up in his Ford. Found a 271 DHD in Omaha. Figured it is time to upgrade anyways.

I feel like tracking down the PO and beating the crap out of him. I'm pretty sure he was aware of the problem and patched it up for someone else to deal with. Its odd that it took 25k miles for this problem to surface. 13 frickin hours from home.

make sure you get one that is the same somewhat to yours, if not you will have to split the case ans swap the input shafts, about 4 hours worth of work
