Having Problem with Rear Brakes

hey guys the other day i had to have my truck towed i was going down the road and someone cutout in front of me i slammed on the brakes and after that the truck would not move got it home and took off the tires to find the last person the replace the rear brakes put the star adjusters for the e brake on backwards and never replaced the caliper slides,:argh::bat: long storie short fixed it all and it seemed fine yesterday coming home from work stopped for fuel when i went to leave the truck would not move again had it towed back home pulled everything back apart to find nothing wrong put the wheel back on and took it for a ride everything seems fine again just down the street from the house taped the brakes coming around the corner and the drivers side wheel locked up. just powered it home only about 200' and pulled the wheel off the rotor and caliper were smoking and hot as hell compared to the otherside took the caliper off and it seems to slide fine on slides and the piston moves freely. i at a lose any help would be great.

sorry for such a long story just wanted everyone to know the story behind my problem

Sounds like your needing some new calipers, brake pads, and hardware.

05cumminsdrw 02-19-2009 04:57 AM

i already repalced all the hardwarenand pads and also bench tested the caliper

I had this happen to me once and it was in the master cylinder. Got some crap in it and wouldn't let the brakes release. I took it off and just cleaned it out good. I had a plunger that was stuck. Has worked fine ever since then:U: Hope that might be your problem also

05cumminsdrw 02-19-2009 06:33 AM

thanks jazz i will pull that off tonight and take a look at it

05cumminsdrw 02-20-2009 12:21 PM

ok so i pullled the master off last night and there some stuff floating in there pulled it all apart and cleaned everything also flushed all the lines with new fluid took for test ride everything seemed cool till i tried a panic stop just to check and now both rears are locking up and not moving:argh::argh: please someone help i realy dont want to bring it to the stealer ship but i am running out of time and ideas thanks for your help sofar:U:

Jazz 02-20-2009 12:27 PM

When mine did it I had to push hard on the plunger in there and it finally let go and blew fluid all over me. Maybe there is still some sludge in it:humm:
Mine would push the fluid to activate the brakes but wouldn't let it flow back to release. Did they bleed out good?

05cumminsdrw 02-20-2009 07:07 PM

yea jazz i took the hole thing off the truck cleaned every part of it out it looked brand new when i was done with it and, yes they did bleed out good no problems till i hit the road and it heats up thats the funny part:argh:

05cumminsdrw 02-21-2009 07:32 PM

ok well i took everything off the truck today master, block under the master cleaned out everything with miniral spirits even the abs block :humm: not sure if i should have or not but owell hope i dont hurt the abs system:ouch: that would suck but anyways even cleaned out the little block on the rear axle that splits the fluid to both rear wheels but ran out of daylight:argh: have to finish up tommorow and hopfully i have no more problems

Jazz 02-22-2009 07:39 AM

Keep us posted on this, and I wish you the best:c:

diesel pap 02-22-2009 08:08 AM

you have a block somewhere going back to master which you already know. i have had trouble with rubber lines going to calibers before. lines were broke inside and checking fluid returning

05cumminsdrw 02-22-2009 07:01 PM

yea i went through the hole truck again today i think i have it narrowed down the the abs pump i have been able to put fluid back through everything till it gets to the abs and it stops does anbody know if its designed to flow back through the abs pump or not. thanks guys for the help so far:U:

05cumminsdrw 02-24-2009 08:10 AM

ok so here is the latest update everything has been flushed from the master all the way back to the caplipers replaced both calipers and rubber hose's that go to them still had the same issue, would work till it heated up them the rears would lockup:argh: So i pushed the fluid from every wheel back to the master but when i tried to push the rears up it would not go through the abs system, so :pals: of mine at a local boneyard let me borrow a new one of a wreched truck:w2: put it on yesterday but now the abs light is on:argh: but on the plus side it seems like the brake problem has been solved :U: for now. does anyone know why the light mite be on do i need to get the computer reflashed or something. thanks for all your help guys you :rocking:

Jazz 02-24-2009 08:16 AM

Not sure on the abs light. Those things can be pretty funky at times. Maybe some one else will know more:U: Good to hear the problem is gone:c:

wildbill 02-24-2009 10:18 PM

Good question. :humm:

cummins tech 02-25-2009 12:02 AM

the abs light could be on because the abs system has not been bleed. when u replace the abs u have to bleed the system with a scaner. it's also the modual, the modual that u installed probley has the wrong tire size in it and it could have the vin installed from the other vehicle. the only problem is that u might have to buy a new modual to get it to work right.. but glad its all fixed but for the light.

05cumminsdrw 02-25-2009 06:16 AM

thanks cummins tech i will look into the mod. i know the truck it came out of was the same thing as mine just more milage, and i did know about the bleeding thing with a scanner do you know if it can be done with the snapon scanner or if it has to be done with one from the dealer. thanks for the info:5:

cummins tech 02-25-2009 09:13 PM

Any time. I have never tryed it with a snap-on scanner. I have always done it with the Dealers scanners but i also have access to them.

05cumminsdrw 02-26-2009 06:22 PM

ok yea i tried it lastnight with the snap-on and it didnt work i have an appointment on saturday for them to look at it i willl let you guys know what they say thanks for all the help everyone:c:

cummins tech 02-26-2009 11:45 PM

No Problem. See if u can talk to the tech and tell him that u swapped out ur modual and that u just need it recalabrated for the latest update and to programe tire size.

05cumminsdrw 02-27-2009 06:15 AM

ok will do

wildbill 02-27-2009 12:17 PM

Fix the ABS light??

05cumminsdrw 02-28-2009 06:23 AM

no not yet i have to drop the truck off around 10 this morning i will letg everyone know how i make out later today. i just hope i dont need to get a new modual that would suck:ouch:

05cumminsdrw 03-01-2009 06:18 PM

ok so here is the update got it back from the dealer ship and the abs light is off but :argh: the tech said i am going to need drivers side front hub i guess he was getting a differant reading from that wheel than all the other ones he said they could do it for 800:ouch: told them i was set i will do it myself but as for the brakes they are all good:rocking:
