08 Dies While Driving Down the Road

The last 2 days my friends 08 6.4 just dies going down the road. Has happened twice now after the first time he took it to the dealer and they could find nothing wrong.
Temps have been Sub 0 the last several days but it isn't a jelling problum.
I guess after a few minutes it starts right up.
Has anyone heard of this happening??

gunman41mag 12-17-2008 04:36 AM

I had a FORD RANGER That did that, I changed the FORD COMPUTER BOX, the FUEL PUMP and I was never able to fix it !! It would turn off and about 10 minutes later it would start right up and run perfect !!

Should still be under warranty.

It is still under warranty and the dealer said they worked on it 5 hours so I am sure they did every test possible.
When it dies he is driving down the road so you loose your power steering ,power brakes.

Sounds like something is getting hot, like gunman said. As soon as it cools off, can restart the engine.

My 08 has done that twice - Ford can't get it to act up when in the shop so they are telling me there is nothing they can do to help me - the customer service people basically told me its my problem and the chances are its going to get worse the more miles I put on it - alot of guys are having good luck with them but I am sick of my 'PowerJOKE' and the way manufacturers handle the problems. I am working on the lemon law with mine as we speak - good luck to you buddy

try taking them to a diferent dealer. I bet right after the warranty expires on it and you take the truck in i bet they find it tight away.

Interesting you had the problum to and your in Texas where it doen't get that cold. I was thinking it was possibly a cold weather problum. Becasue in my friends case it was about -15 both times when it happened.
I had a 97 powerstroke lemmoned once. It went good after the factory people got involved. Strange thing is that 97 powerstroke never made it more then 3000 miles without needing new injectors a computer or something. In the 17,000 miles I had it, ford replace 4 sets of injectors.
I got my 97 replaced with a 99 powerstroke and that was a good truck.

i am not impressed with the 6.4... it pulls for sh** gets hot while pulling the fan constantly runs... our 08 DRW at work had 26000 miles on it and the egr cooler failed and bent a rod so it got a brand new 12500 motor and it still pulls like sh** granted it is always grossed out at 26k but our 08 SRW duramaxes can handle the load no problem... all in all not impressed but i think i would still buy one given the chance cuz when its not pullin it is a nice truck...

I think it has to do with the programs they are putting in them. I got mine in Nov '07 and there has been at least 6 different ones since then. I got the newest one in now - haven't drove it yet - still at the dealer. I'm gonna pick it up tomorrow so I can run the sh%t out of it this weekend to try it out. This last one took them 8 weeks to figure out. On the '03 models they were putting out a new program every week at the start. The dealership I go to didn't even know there was a new one out until I told them :humm: I got the info from another dealer. He might wat to check on that.

have they at least pulled trouble codes....were any present? I am primarily looking for one of these P0003, P0004 or P0091...and/or has fuse 74 ever been blown?

I don't know about his but if its anything like mine there are no codes showing up. My dealership said that was strange - half chafed about the whole deal I told them its not strange its a new model Ford. :madd:

Thats a good idea, make sure your going to a dealer that sees this trucks all the time with a good diesel tech. Some dealers just deal with the cars and very seldom see a diesel and they call in a diesel tech from another dealership. My freind has a 08 6.4 and had a problem like this and it was taking in to much moisture through the intake,( everytime it snowed this was happening) so the dealership couldn't get it to do it in the shop. A good tech will put the vehicle through all different types of situations to get the problem to occure. I hate those phone calls, well we can't seem to see any problems here at the shop and they make you feel like an idiot, But I tell you the day your forking out the 50,000 grand or so to buy it they make you feel like your god to get you out the door with the sale.:bat:

txredman 12-20-2008 10:54 AM

They make you feel like a God when you are buying it, then you are the Devil when you bring it in cause it's havin problems. You are kind of stuck when you take it back and they 'can't duplicate your problem'. Sure its under warranty and you can KEEP taking it back but you are still making a payment on the thing while its in the shop the whole time. Everybody knew the new model diesels would have probs with the emissions crap they have on them and I blame myself for buying one the first year they came out. The Lemon Law deal is not an easy process but some times its the only route. I've been 3 months now trying to get mine fixed so I could keep it - very nice truck - just makes me nervous thinking about what I will have to pay for after the warranty is up.

gunman41mag 12-20-2008 01:36 PM

Whats The Current Status Of this Situation?

carmelo-manic-mechanic@ho 01-07-2009 12:06 PM

ask the dealer or find a dealer that will put a little black box in your truck it will record all the aspects while YOU drive it and then when it acts up it should show on their computer.

Hummin Cummins 01-08-2009 10:25 PM

No new news, the truck has been running fine. Next week there are a few days that the highs are going to be -15 or so. So it will be interesting to see if it will happen again.

wildbill 01-10-2009 09:14 AM

Thread started can reopen as we can assume the problem has been fixed. :U:
