Im helping a friend fix her 1-ton. it aint the injectors, according to our local greasemonkeys. does it sound like maybe the glowplugs or what?:argh:

So what did you find out? Was it the glow plugs?

Here is a link to troubleshooting a hard / no start problem with the 7.3. Good luck...

Leak in the fuel line or filter. Maybe check that out.

first thing is you need to get your hands on a GOOD scanner like a MAC or Snapon or Matco that has a ton of test functions. the first thing to do is "BUZZ" test the injectors. they all should sound the same but if you have a bad one it'll sound a little "off". they start buzzing the number one injector whick is on the passenger side front then 2 is the driver side front and alternate sides with 7 being on the rear of the passenger side and 8 on the rear of the driver side. if that test fine then move on to looking at the HPOP pressures on the scan tool. it sounds to me like you are having a leaking injector (hence the black smoke) and a HPOP leak due to it shutting down after starting. this could be due to improper additives in the oil allowing for it to foam and allow air into the High Pressure oiling System that fires the injectors.

Thread starter can reopen if he/she desires, as we can assume the problem has been fixed.
